Only in Canada eh?

Today the American President is visiting Canada, for, count 'em, SIX whole hours! Do I faint in appreciation now or later? But we are a hospitable nation. The President will be greeted the airport by one of our 'less than in the good graces of his own Prime Minister' politicians, but unlike the President, will not be allowed on Parliament Hill today. Go figure THAT one out......... A Canadian Group for Obama for President, have written a special song for the President, and will sing it to him from outside the Parliament Buildings while he is in conference with our Prime Minister..........do ya' think he'll HEAR it?!!! Oh and let's not forget the days and dollars that have been spent getting army personnel, tanks and BIG GUNS moved up onto Parliament Hill as a show of security for the President. Good heavens, the very THOUGHT that anything could happen to a politician in OUR country is scary in the extreme! NOT!!! Luncheon will not be served...........but I'm sure the moonshine will! LOL So my American friends...........did you know that your Pres was so pally pally with our PM?

I didn't know he was going to Canada and that is such a short time to visit for all of the trouble that was gone through for his benefit. But then realistically who wants to put up with a president from another country for very long? I mean really come on, everyone on their p's and q's and all that hoopla over a visit. And oh yeah what if something did happen to him there. Oh my goodness, drop the flag, let out the dogs, and pick up your rifles because somebody will have to pay for that.lol

olive everyone has. And just because the new president is who he is doesn't mean or shouldn't mean that we cann't do as we always have to all of the others. He needs to get his head out of his butt and accept things in the way they are meant, as jokes just like all of the other presidents did. There have been many, many jokes attributed to all of them, why should he be any different. He is not anyone special. For peke's sake. No, olive I had not heard about that guy. It's sad though what we are coming to that we can't joke around anymore or do him the same way as the others have been done.

Hey Moon, Did you hear on the news this morning about the man in OK. who was pulled over by police because he had a sign on his car..."Abort O'Bama, not babies", then when he got home the Secret Service was waiting on him. He had to prove that he didn't mean kill O'Bama. I told my husband I guess for the next 4 years we will have to walk on pins and needles. I have never wanted to see harm come to anyone, but dang I have done some tongue lashings in my time, LOL. Blessings Marilyn

Do you want to keep him? I think he should stay home and WORK, something he seems to delegate out to others. He's been on two vacations and off out to Colorado to sign a bill (wasting taxpayer's money), and now to Canada in the less than a month he's been in office! Apparently the White House doesn't appeal to him enough to stay there and work.

I'm waiting to see wheat he offers the regular citizen in the 'real estate' stimulus package due for unveiling this week............
• Regina, Saskatchewan
19 Feb 09
Well his visit here is a 'work' visit as he and our PM will be discussing the U.S. economic stimulus package which has statements in it not good for Canada and our PM wants to see the wording changed so that less of OUR tax dollars are going over the border to U.S. coffers from raw materials and goods originating in Canada, going to the U.S. for manufacturing and being returned to Canadian markets for sale. We're paying import taxes and levees all out of proportion to the trade agreements already in place and our PM wants to see those trade agreements honored................it's a mess.
@Barb42 (4214)

19 Feb 09
You have that right; it is a MESS! And a big one! The entire stimulus package is a joke! There is hardly anything to stimulate the economy. And they rushed to pass it so nobody would really know what was in it. Hardly any of the Congressmen know anything much about it because they never had time to read it. It was forced on them for the wrong reasons. They were told IF they didn't hurry up and sign it that the country would never be the same. Do tell! The country will never be the same because they DID sign a bill with so much pork in it and nothing to help stimulate the country! AND we are more in debt now than we've ever been. Talk about Bush spending! He never held a candle to this president!

Well I certainly hope so, we aren't doing to well with our neighbors to the South, we better take care of the ones to the North. I have several cousins who are Canadians and we really just look upon them a family that got lost up North. No they are wonderful people and truly loved. Enjoy

Actually it's OUR PM that wants something. So I'm actually rather gratified that your Pres. is taking the time to come and discuss it.............it all has to do with trade agreements between our two countries that the U.S. hasn't honored in years and Bush was only beginning to settle when he was voted out........

We ship our lumber to the U.S., they return it in the form of books, and we pay taxes up the wazzoo even though trade agreements say this won't happen. If the price of books comes down I'll be a happy camper!

And we Canadians had a hard time getting enough troops, tanks, planes, and military equipment to help in the Afghan war, our ships are almost scrap metal, and they were able to have tanks to protect Obama. What does he have that our troops who are in Afghanistan and the ones that were helping in Iraq do not have? Oh sorry, he has part black skin, charismatic, and it is politically correct to have a black president in the States because according to false ecology, we all were supposed have originated in Africa and they are our true masters! *excuse the sarcasm * Sign of bad things to come. Presidents and prime ministers do not demand so much security unless they plan to sign in some laws that goes against the country and turns the country into a socialist or facist state. Oh we had a prime minister Chretian who would have become a dictator if he was not voted out, and that is when they started all that high security on Parliament hill.
23 Feb 09
The news that there are going to be more American troops sent to Afghanistan must be worrying the British troops there given the American habit of bombing there own allies in so called "friendly fire" incidents.

19 Feb 09
Canada AM reported this morning that over two million dollars for security alone was spent for this visit! Outrageous! American television reported that Obama has committed to beefing up the U.S. presence in Afghanistan and there was a 'turn over' of leadership today. They say Canada will still operate independently, but you can bet your bottom dollar that we are going to see more Canadian casualties now that the U.S. presence has been beefed up as we'll be 'tarred with the same brush' as them now...............

I remember when he was elected saying that Canada was going to be one of his first stops to visit. It made us seem most important. I don't know what you mean by "less than in the good graces", though. Granted, I don't keep up on every little political detail. So humour me, eh?

Yes, our country is the President's first official state visit. You'd think our PM would give him more than six hours wouldn't you? LOL And the politician not in our PM's good graces right now is Michael Ignasius. The Governor General was there to greet him too.....

No I didn't but it only makes sense, we always have to play footsie with our close Canadian neighbors never know when we are going to get into one of those big wars with you guys that are always brewing in the background! And speaking of brewing, I guess that's why they probably shared a bit of "shine" together, keep each of them calm during all of the tough negotiations that no doubt went on behind closed doors! Personally, I think President Obama may have had a tad bit too much of that stuff as he appears to have not been able to pronounce or he forgot where he was during his speach! :D I know I will sleep better tonight, how 'bout you? (In case you happen to look at my profile, it says I live in The Netherlands, and I do, but I was born and raised in Los Angeles that's why I felt it was OK to respond to your discussion! ;)

You could live on the moon my dear, and still be welcome in my discussions! LOL And yes, I slept very well............. But you know, I think the reason the U.S. plays footsies with US is because we are the only country in the world to have ever defeated American intervention over and over. LOL We're polite, but we're stubborn too! ROFL

lol after all, the us is canada's largest trading partner so it makes sense that they get together. i heard there was a very large crowd in ottawa to greet the president. interesting! they have sharp shooters on the tops of buildings and a number of failsafes in place. have they gone to this much trouble in the past when other foreign dignitaries have visited? curious!

No. The U.S. Secret Service wanted to blanket our streets and venues with their people and Canada said, no thanks, we don't go in for that kind of 'show' and we'll take care of security ourselves. We then lined our venues with our Royal Canadian Mounted Police in their smart Red uniforms and restricted the number of Secret Service allowed on our soil. Other dignitaries enjoy Canada precisely because they know that our people aren't going to take pot shots at them and that can feel safe and secure in the hands of our RCMP....

Pals? Harper and Obama?? HAHAHAHHAHA!!! They are very opposite characters in so many ways it isn't funny. Harper had more in common with Bush, and showed it with the military deployment and actions. The only reason Obama is here today, is because he's following a fairly long tradition, where the first out of country visit by the new American president is here to Canada, to visit with our PM. I heard a clip of a recent Obama interview, where he stated he quite likes Canada, and that he's visited here often. Apparently he has family he's stayed with in the Burlington, ON area.
