Most of the people i chat with on-line rarely knows the meanin of there name. Some even says it does not have a meaning. But in my land, name i taking very important. It is believed and widely axccepted that your name defines who u are. For example in my land you can suggest some1's religion, family backgroung, family history and clan, just by knowing thier names and surname. My name is IFEOLUWA and it means THE WILL (or love) OF GOD in English. WHAT ABOUT YOU?

Do you get your name when you are a baby? In USA most are named for family or friends, some for popular stars at the time they are born. There is not much importance attached to a name. We do have cultures in which naming is important. because we are such a melting pot we have people from many countries.

YEAH..in my land, we call it naming ceremony. It is done on the 8th day of the child's birth. Every body who loves the baby gives it a name, but the ones he will use we be the ones given by its parents....And it is a great offences to change your name for anything sake. Once you are named you are named forever. Except for relegious names which you can acquire maybe during baptism or if you convert from one relegion to another-like christian to muslim for instance. So i was named on the 8th day of birth.

i am from the tribe of YORUBA. Mostly in Nigeria but we do have clans in Cuba. Benin, Brazil and the US. A proverb even says "a sharp man will have a sharp name".......Names are very important to us infact, they define who we are.

I once had a friend from kenya who told me that names are a big deal in Africa. I am from India and there are a lot of mixed cultures here, some insist on names of Gods' others on auspicious sounding names and like another poster here, names that are a mix of their parents names. But my culture is laid back and my parents were free to choose any name they liked. I have not found the meaning of my name yet, but I like it very much cos its very rare. I hate to have a name that when I am called, everyone turns their head too .

I my country some names are very common probably because they have strong meanings. But still you can never call a name and more than two heads turn. Reason been that, it is the circumstances sorrounding the persons birth or what the parents wants for him in the future that determines the name of the child which can rarely be thesame for different child. There names for specific occasions and those are the ones that more than one can have. E.g those that are born on xmas or on friday of mondays or sundays or on esther because thay all have the same name. altho they may have others but they bears that name so of cause those will be common.

Well, my name is John Paul, John means God is gracious and Paul means small or humble. According to my mother, I was named after Pope John Paul the Second. I play online games wherein I would name my characters in code names, but when I get to know people in-game and would be their friend, I would insist that they would call me by either John Paul or Paul. Being called by your name means that the person who calls you is giving you value, so it's really one great thing about names. Being called and recognized by your real name increases your self-worth, so you should insist being called by it! :)
