Feeling Bad Lately & Not Wanting to Cook!

Lately my allergies have been very bad. I feel terrible most of the time and my energy levels are way down. I am noticing as I get older that certain scents get my allergies going (cigarette smoke just messes me up) more and more. I am finding that I am even allergic to certain laundry detergents and cleaners around the house. Also certain foods are causing me to feel poorly as well. I do not know if this is a phase I am going through or what. Needless to say, I have not felt like cooking lately. It is so sad because before all of this kicked in we went to Sam's Club and stocked up on groceries. My freezer is full and so are the cabinets but I do not feel like cooking anything. My family is getting very annoyed and so am I to an extent. Have you ever just felt like you did not want to cook? What did you do to get you in the mood? I have been like this for going on 2 weeks now. It is getting scary because I like to cook!

Sometimes I watch a cooking show on Food network and get inspired. I have problems with my allergies too. When I do I don't feel like doing anything. Sudafed helps me a little with clearing my head and given me more energy. Do you take allergy meds? I do but they don't seem to work anymore.

I take Zyrtec too. Not helping me much anymore either. What is Zyrtec D?

Zyrtec D has the decongestant added to it. If you are taking the regular one try taking the Zyrtec D if you are congested. I hope it works for you.

I do take Zyrtec D but its effects are not a great on me as they use to be. I have tried almost every OTC allergy medication there is. Zyrtec D was the one that worked best for me and I was put on it when it was a prescribed medication. For some reason my body has built a tolerance to this med and I need to go back to my doc to get re-evaluated again. I also love to watch the Food Network channel! I do get inspired to cook what they show, however, as an allergy sufferer yourself, you know how bad it feels when your head weighs a ton and you are miserable. I am finally coming out of it but I do have to be more careful about being around smoke. Thank you for your reply!

I am sorry to hear that you feel so poorly, I agree with the previous post that perhaps a doctors visit would be your next step. In the meantime, I always find that my crockpot is a life-saver on those 'blah' days, everyone gets them from time to time. Just toss some stuff in and forget it till dinnertime. I hope you feel better soon.

You are exactly right, a crock pot is a life saver! I do love to use it. Do you have any special recipes you use?

my co-worker mentioned that her allergies are really bad this year. perhaps its a bad year? as for me, i have severe arthritis (no cartlidge in my knees) and i cannot stand for very long. fortunately my hubby loves to cook and we are teaching our daughters how to cook, so he and our daughters do all our cooking :-)

Sorry about your arthritis. It is great that your husband cooks and that your daughters are willing to learn. Thanks for replying!

I might have some good news for you. If it started while you were shopping at Sam's Club, do you also notice it happening at Walmart? If so, what's causing the problem is not the food. It's the fumes from the plastic shrink wrap that's on all of the pallets of food that are unloaded. If you look at any of the warehouse type stores, there are pallets of it all around. One or two are unwrapped at a time for shoppers to select from, the rest are left wrapped. The plastic itself emits fumes. It was so bad for me that I had to stop shopping at those types of stores. Normal grocery stores stock at night, but leave the wrapped pallets in their stockrooms until needed. Warehouse stores store them all on the floor. You are probably associating the food with the allergic reaction you had, and a fear of having the same reaction. It's not the food, really! To test that out, have a member of the family prepare something simple for dinner, and you stay in the kitchen while they do it. You'll see that you don't have a reaction, and then you will have confidence to resume the pleasure of cooking.

I'm typically not allergic to anything, but one day when I was at Walmart, a clerk was unpacking some new clothing in the ladies department. Of course, I had to go take a look.... As I got closer, my eyes started to run and I got a horrible instant headache. I though I was going to pass out. The clerk told me that was from the fumes from the plastic (each item was in a bag that she was removing). She herself was reacting to it too, and I felt bad for her. She went on to tell me about the plastic pallet wrap used at the food warehouses and that she was allergic to it. I hope that your doctor gives you something that helps you to feel like your old self again. One good thing out of all this is, probably your family is finding more respect for what you do for them, with the little hiatis from normal tasks.

It often happens that we feel bad and therefore, do not wish to cook. Deep within us, the desire to cook is there, but the feeling bad will not allow us to cook.

Yes that is very true. I love to watch the food network and think of all of the meals they make. I do still love to cook but the true cooking will happen when I get much better. Thank you for replying.

Hi Shellyann, I am pregnant with baby #5 and all interest has been lost in cooking and pretty much everything else that takes any effort. Back on topic, I took out my crockpot, which I never use because I think it's a pain. It has been a life saver. I just toss in the food and walk away. I figure I can commit to spending 10-15 minutes, adding ingredients and/or chopping. In fact, I just tossed a nice piece of beef and some veggies in for a pot roast dinner tonight. I did one last week yummy!!!! Our dinner staples have become: beef stew, chicken stew, chili, semi-homemade spaghetti sauce with meat and without, bourbon chicken with rice, meatballs with brown gravy over mashed potatoes and the pot roast.I'm really liking the comfort foods these days, can you tell? All with minimal effort. That & the husband has discovered the kitchen....even easier :)

Misskyla I do feel for you. I know how it is being pregnant! I was pregnant last year and felt the exact same way! I do love the crock pot but I need to find more recipes. The normal things are getting rather boring. Could you share your recipe for the bourbon chicken? That sounds wonderful! Lots of luck with your new baby!

I feel sorry for you Shelly, I hope you see your doctor for advise-I would hoever urge yo to cook and eat because we are what we eat! Without food, you will find extremely difficult to manage your allergy. Please cook food and eat with a good appetitite!

Oh yes I have been cooking a bit but not the things I really want to cook. Luckily for me I did have some frozen meals such as meatloaf and lasagna that I had prepared and had for just such occasions. I am feeling much better at the moment but I do need to go back to my doc for a check up. Thanks for your reply!

Maybe the only reason why you don't want to cook is because you are so bothered with your allergies. Try to take medications first to relieve your allergies and maybe once your well again, you will have the urge to cook again...

Hi Shellyann, It may well be your allergies. I don't have many allergies to worry about but I dohave a condition that causes me great pain to stand and walk around for more than a couple of minutes. I love to cook. But now because of my condition, it makes it so hard me. But I have a hubby that still wants to eat, just as your family does. Maybe seeing a doctor would be in order. There may be more to the story than your allergies. I miss my real cooking abilities. But life goes on. Let us know what happens. Hugsss leenie

Can you take any anti-histamines? I get hayfever, and take anti-histamines that are non-drowsy, not every day though. I often don't feel like cooking when I don't feel well. I think it is because I have to be hungry to think of what we're going to eat, so if I feel ill, I just can't think of anything to cook, or the idea of it just makes me feel worse.

I do take Zyrtec D but it does not have the same effect on me that it use to. I need to go back to the doc and see if there is anything new on the market that I can try. I also am the same way about cooking if not feeling well. I like to cook by what I have a taste for. Thank you for replying.
