I'm thinking about running a 1/2 marathon 2 weeks before a bigger race that is important to me. Do you think this will help me or hurt me?

I would say that it depends on your bigger race. A lot of the training progressions I've seen have included a run almost as long as your actual race 2-3 weeks before so you can get a feel for the distance. Of course its not usually AS long as your race because on race day you got competition and adrenaline pumping through your veins! If you do decide to do it then use it as a long run *workout* instead of a race and just finish it..don't push yourself at all because that really WILL take it out of you for your big race and will also ruin your taper (if you're tapering of course..) good luck!
