Well he was at it again last night howling and barking. Every hour he would start up again until I took him out. I hope this isn't becoming a habit. I cant lose sleep like this every night. I will have to figure something out to do. Some people did suggest getting him fixed. What do you think? Hes 5 years old and never did this before.

That is strange that at 5 he would suddenly start this if he has not done it before. Has anything changed about his nighttime sleeping arrangements? Do you go to bed at a different time? Did you buy a clock that makes noise? Are there any new noises that weren't there before? One of my dogs is fixed and one isn't. The one that is fixed actually barks a lot more often then the one that is not fixed so I am not sure fixing him would do the trick. That is a very painful procedure for them and they usually are pretty hostile to you for a while after. Especially where he is not a puppy anymore, it will take him longer to heal and cause him a lot more pain. If he has never barked like this before then something must be bothering him. It might be a noise you can't hear. Maybe your neighbors got a new dog and he can hear it?

it is true that dogs have the ability to hear those sounds which we cannot. it is possible that this is the thing that might have caused it. however, if we think deeply about this to be the reason for the strange behaviour, it is unlikely that it will go on night after night. the peculiar sound could have lasted only for a night. i think this to be so, since unusual sounds at night are just like that, caused by an unusual occurrence, too. maybe, it will be for the best interest of both the dog and its owner that they both pay a visit to the nearby vet.

hello moneymommy lol i am very sorry to hear that you didn't get much sleep last night again because of your dog keeping you awake like that. what was your dog's name again? lol what i would do is take him out right before bedtime, then you might have to get firm with the dog, an hour later when he wants to go back outside, then let him know that your not going to put up with him all night long again like that. lol take action! i would be so upset with Doughnut if she pulled that on me twice in a row like that. she would be in the doghouse for sure. lol i wish you luck in getting some sleep tonight! you might have to wind up getting him fixed like that if he continues to keep you up all night long wanting to go outside. when he does want to go outside like that during the night, does he want to keep going back to the same spot each time? take care and have a beautiful day today!

oh, so your dog is now restless because he wants to have a partner. now, the next question moneymommy is, is there a neighbor with a female dog that is in heat? if so, take advantage of the opportunity so your dog will have his shot at this. now, the second step. if the best way to pacify your dog will be to have him fixed, then you might as well go ahead with it immediately. if this problem will not be addressed properly fast enough, you might develop an insomnia condition triggered by this experience. before this happens, go ahead with your plan, see the vet.

Is it your schnauzer? I have one too. Actually, he is in surgery this morning because he developed bladder stones. I am worried sick waiting to hear from the vet. You said he has never done this before? How many days has he been doing this? Ok, I have a lot of questions (LoL). Where does he stay at night? I wonder what the problem is. Keep me updated.

What about your poor Dog, he is suffering because he can't do what nature is telling him to do. Take him in and get him fixed.

Yes we are looking into it. He never behaved like this before which is so strange. He has been around girl dogs before but this one dog has him going crazy.

This month is special for spaying and neutering animals, so you should be able to get a good price.

Aww, maybe you should just take him to the vet and do what they advise. I love dogs, they are such loving animals

Yes it is becoming a bad habit I told you that, what you are doing is training your dog to know that when he howls he will be taking outside.

all my dogs were fixed when they were puppies. i think there is an age limit. your dog might be too old. if he isn't have it done. he should stop doing what he is doing. he is probably in heat and is looking for a mate. good luck

Dogs do also hear noises that humans don't so that could be something else too. I would take him to the vet anyway just to be safe. He might not be feeling well and has no other way to let you know.

good lord, fix him! He doesn't need to breed, there are too many unwanted animals as it is, and it will prevent him from getting into fights, and getting certain kinds of cancer

There are several reasons why dogs suddenly start behaving like this. Why don't you read the article "DOES YOUR DOG BARK A LOT?" on the site http://www.dogcarereviews.com/does-your-dog-bark-a-lot/ . Maybe you may find some useful tips to help him not to feel restless like that again.

hi, be patient with your dog since he has lived with you for so many years and this is unusual, right? check if he is telling you something or something different happened to him. is he feeling all right? there must be a reason for him doing so. don't forget dogs are our best friends ! even better than human beings in most cases.
