Yesterday before I went to writing group, I was in the library where we meet and the librarian and another patron were having a conversation about books. The patron said that reading was the best hobby in the world. The librarian said that she loved being part of the book industry and thought that was the best job in the world. At this point, I actually joined the conversation and said that I thought creating stories was the best job in the book industry. Who's right?

I have often thought that working in a library would be an ideal job because it is quiet. I could spend my day shelving books (I often reshelve the ones in the wrong place anyway) and not have to talk to that many people and deal with drama and personalities. Then I found out it doesn't pay very well. At least not at the local civil service level.
I am not sure that I can look upon reading as a hobby. A hobby is a lightweight pasttime that is not necessarily all that serious of a pursuit. It is more or less a weekend activity, something we do in between all the important tasks of our day to day lives.
To me reading is as important as eating and breathing and serves so many purposes from informing to educating to entertaining us. Literacy is the key to freedom and intelligent thought and I could go on and on, but I will spare everyone.
Writing to me is one of the most important things in the world one do because documentation is so important. Whether the writing serves to forever capture a moment in history or a moment of emotion, writing like visual images helps to preserve what has been for the benefit of those yet to come.
Ok, I'm done.

i think book industry needs both.together they make it best thing in this world.some people have to write, some of us have read, unless u write there will be nothing to read.unless we read what written there is no point in writing.its two sides of a coin.support each other.world of books is a place i would like to lose my self,go on reading till my eyes fail me.there won't be a day where there are no material to read.its everfreah, people will have this urge to express their ideas, thoughts in words, others like me live to read whats being expressed by others.hip pp hurray,go on producing books,i will go on reading.

I'm with you. Creating character, plots and stories has got to be the best job in the world. I know that when I write at some point the characters seem to take over and I lose myself in the story but I love to read as well.

I can see myself agreeing with you more though i am just another reader. I always find myself admiring the author more than the story even in the middle of a plot. Though i knew i would never make a good writer myself, i don't deny dreaming of being one. And i also say reading is the best hobby as it gives me many options even for my dreams. I mean i would never have to think about the road not taken , and those novels make me feel i always have a way out of every thing. Tank you all writers i cant thank any one more.

non of you and all of you. Without one there could not be the other. If no one is going to read it then why write, if nothing has been writen then you can't read, and with out the middle-man word of the two would never get out
