My novel is better than others I've read lately.

I have been in Australia on holiday for the past ten weeks, and have read about six novels, not classics, but stories that we read for entertainment, and on long flights. I think my novel is as good, if not better than the ones I read. It's getting more difficult to get published nowadays, especially in the current economic times, but I'm, still hopeful I can achieve that goal without paying out excessive costs required by self publishing companies. Have you written something you would like to publish?

I think in the current economic situation when folks are jobless, reading is an activity that they are more likely to do. After all, reading is a much cheaper hobby than most other activities. I do not have any knowledge about publishing. Just to sound an idea out, what about ebook format? I mean, you can have a long version for paperback. And a reader digest version of it in ebook format.

Unless you're famous, or have connections, it's near impossible for a first time author to get published. There are a lot of vanity publishers that will print at a cost. Unfortunately I don't have money for that.

Thanks for your your most interesting suggestions. Actually, it's possible to get printing done at a reasonable price in Thailand. However, I've yet to find a program to get the A4 sheets to a paperback size. I'll search all my options, thanks.

Is it possible for you to source for a publisher in China or Vietnam? After all, most of the books in the market are printed in China. If you have Chinese friends that you can trust, you may sound them out. What about those book clubs that do their own printing? They may be more agreeable if you give them exclusive rights to market your book. Anyway think long and hard about it. There must be a way to do it. I really do not have any idea about publishing. So please dont rely on my stupid ideas so much.

I can't imagine self-publishing would ever work to make money for a fictional novel. You would have to spend more money to promote it against the other novels out there. I have to say that I have read some very lousy novels out there over the years. If they can get published, maybe yours can too. I guess you have to let someone read it and see what happens. If you really believe in it, don't just go off one person's opinion though. I know some very successful books and authors were rejected several times before they made it. Get prepared for rejection. All it takes though is for one person to say yes and then you are in! Of course I hear that even published authors have a tough time making money unless you have a a huge hit.

You are right! Famous authors like F Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway faced rejection and still kept on writing. You can't stop at the first sign of rejection if you believe in your work.

Selfpublishing is only there to make profits for the publishing compamies. The author is only a secondary consideration, as he/she is the source of the companies cash flow. I know I have to keep writing and have just started on my next novel. Thanks for the input.

I am on my seventh draft of my novel and like you, compared to what I read, it is much better. But I know I have to fight against the good novelists like Tom Clancy, so I need two more revisions before it is ready. It is hard to get published when you are an unknown, and I cannot afford self=publishing so it has to be through an agent. Not only that, I have to print out the novel, and I need a better printer. The one I have only does a couple of pages before the ink runs out. Got it with my computer from hell and my husbands says I do not need a new one -but with each cartridge costing $40 -. I have published an article and a short story, but that is all. I plan to publish this novel when I am finished.

Keep at it suspensful. I think I did about seven or eight drafts, and had it read by four or five other teachers, who gave critical reports. I'm now trying to get it printed on paperback size paper os I can at least get some copies, and send them to various reviewers. This is my naxt tact.

I haven't published anything but dream to one day do so, I fear though that the costs of publishing would be to great. Even if I can only get my story published in a magazine I would be happy and hopeful as I would atleast get a little recognition and royalty!

Well turn your dreams to reality and write some things down. Good luck when you decide to have your work printed.

I personally have not published anything, though a long story of my grandson for four years when he lived with us, and a book of translation from an american contemperary novelist. I do not have plan to publish them, which is too conflicated process requiring relations and resources. They are proof of my endeavors and helped to kill my time in the previous years. One of my friend did have a inofficially published travel book, which covers almost around the globe with her husband, well written. The book expands my knowledge of the world, and tells details and observations from perspective of a lady.

Thanks for the input. I got great satisfaction just by completing the novel. From my early twenties I've said I would write a book sometime. Now that its finished, and I believe it's pretty good, I'd like to have someone publish it.

I have wanted to write a book ever since I left school. I started, as so many do, with an autobiography, but decided only my family would be interested in that, so changed to fiction. I won a short story competition in a small newspaper, and then decided to write a complete story.

If your book measures up against novels you've been reading, then you probably have a pretty good chance of getting it published. Publishers are looking for good material! The best thing to do is find an agent to take you on, and let them help you find a publisher. You will also get an unbiased view of your work. If no agent will take you, you know you have more work to do. Good luck, I envy you. I have some short stories I'd like to see published one day, but they are not ready yet.

The difference is when you send your query letter to a publishing company, you get put in a big slush pile, along with thousands of others trying to get published. When you find an agent, that person will have meetings with publishers where they try and sell your idea. Although it is difficult to succeed, new authors come along every day and get published. There has been a string of 20-somethings recently who have gotten big book deals, so if your material is really the best you can make it, I say, put it out there and see what comes your way. Good luck.

Several people have read my work, and I've had some other teachers edit it. All agree it's good. Finding an agent is almost as difficult as finding a publisher.

I have had a short story published a few years ago after winning a competition, so I'll try anything. Thanks for your suggestions. I know I'll need a lot of luck.

I hope that you had a lovely holiday in Australia. I hope that you do manage to get your novel published. There are some novels that have been published and perhaps better ones and ones as good that are left unpublished. I know one man that self published a book about a local football team and his son took it round to book shops. It sold lots of copies with all the fans. I am writing a novel and I am a long way of thinking of trying to publish it. Good luck my friend Mipen.

Thank you Max. When I return to Thailand I will look for a printer to print a few copies for me which I hope to send to a few critics. This may help.

Have you tried writting something down, and then reading it and seeing if you enjoy what you read? Give it a go. You might find you enjoy it.
