Heres the delima I have a friend who got an extra $1000 in her bank account due to a bank error. Should she call the bank and tell them or should she spend the money and let them pick up on it? I know the right thing to do is call the bank. Give me honest opinion on this!

She should immediately call the bank and tell them of the error. Money on paper is not real and, though she might spend $1000, the bank will be sure to notice the error sooner or later and correct it. Your friend would then be $1000 out of pocket. Don't forget that a bank can make errors in your favour or in theirs. There is no moral difference in the way you should deal with them. Always inform the bank of the error at the earliest opportunity.

Hi thanx for your responce. That is true. If they have 1000 in her bank account where is it comming from? If they accedently put 1000 in everyones bank account and everyone withdrew it where would the money come from? Who would be responsible?

honestly, for my part, i will just let it be. i will not be touching that money but, i will neither call the bank about it. they will discover about it in time, anyway. then once that they do, they will rectify their error. a notice to this effect will be sent to your friend. i prefer not to touch the money which i know is not mine. so i make sure that i do not withdraw the money which does not belong to me. i believe that this is the best way to deal with this. and so, i have already developed this kind of attitude per the bank accounts that i keep. there is really a need for us to be aware of how much must be our balances in the bank should be. there are times when i get deductions when i didn't make withdrawals. this time, you bet that i file the proper complaints with the bank. because, if i don't, i will surely lose my money for good.

Thank you for responding. I told her the same thing that she should leave the money there. But I told her to call the bank and let them know. The fast that they take it out of her account the less the temptation will be for her to spend it.

I would most definitely tell the bank the error that I found. I would take my statement with me to the bank and talk to somebody there. Didn't she read, or hear, about what happened to those people a few weeks back?! They thought they would keep it and spend it, then got charged with theft and repayment of the money. Even though it's the banks error, it's a person's duty to report it to them. While it might seem enticing to keep it and spend it, she'd be really putting herself at risk by doing so!

i will keep this extra money in my bank account, to answer the question. but of course, i will also check with the bank and ask for the statement of transaction of my account. in that case, the bank will not suspect something strange with your account, and you can see for yourself and tell how did you get the money and who sent you. in the first place, there is privacy that every account holders should be given. it's his choice, to keep the money and keep quiet. or tell the bank and be honest.

oh thats an honor! i felt like writing to it...but i think every thing depends upon the bank.why? because he's the one who gave her the money and made the mistake...

She should call the bank immediately because the bank clerk or teller who made that error will face administrative charges plus she should pay for the shortage. She should always do the right thing. Keeping the money is tempting but as a human being who has moral values, who is educated and who believes that "Honesty is the best policy" should do what she believes the right thing for her to do.

From the standpoint of someone who used to work at a bank, this is what she should do...She should call the bank and ask them where the money came from. At least give them the opportunity to realize and correct the error. They may be trying to figure out where the money went. However, if they still do nothing after being given a couple of chances to correct the error, I would go in and withdraw the money. If she uses the same bank branch all the time, they will likely be familiar with her, and will know that she has given them the opportunity to correct the error, so once she takes the money out after doing so, she should be off the hook if they do nothing and she takes the money out.
