When I was little - probably between 6-10 years old - I remember my sisters and I all climbing onto my bed and rustling around under the covers to see static sparks fly. For some reason my blanket did this very well, with very little movement needed on our parts. We would stay up for hours making static electricity, giggling all night long. Until our parents heard us and hollered up for us to e quiet and go to bed.
Did you ever do this when you were little - or even do you still do this now?

I don't remember ever playing under the blankets like that trying to make sparks when I was a kid. I do remember by brother and I used to go into the closet and pull open band aid's in the dark. When you pull them open really fast they make a spark.

WOW! I did not know that. I'm going to have to give it a try. My sisters are going to think that's way cool too! We'll have to show my grand-nephews how to do that, I'm sure they're love it!

We always did the balloon thing too. That got our hair pretty staticy also, and us girls always had long hair so it got a bit tangled.

i can't understand how you are able to produce electricity under your blanket without much movement. and what actually happen with that static electricity under the blanket. can you describe it more. why does it spark . i have not seen or experienced such things.
i have this experience in school i am in now. every time i accidentally touch my, for example, elbow against the skin on forearms of my seatmate i will feel this small shock or some sort of electricity or like some sort of spike and hurt me a bit .
i don't know why we are having electricity when we accidentally touch each other's skin.
they said or speculate it is because of the air conditioner we use inside the room that cause that static electricity we are experiencing every day.

It didn't work on every blanket and we actually were moving around quite a bit under ours. The flannel of our pajamas would rub against the blanket and make static electricity. It's mostly caused from dry air. It's not "harmful" really, but it can give you a little jolt.

Hey reiny! Yes, I do remember playing with the blanket to make
static electricity! And it did hurt, but it was fun at the
same time! I used to love to see the little burst of light!
I don't like it when it is in my hair though! I also don't
like it when my clothes stick to me! I remember when my skirts
used to stick to my pantyhose! That was not a fun memory!

Ugh, static electricity with clothes was not fun - except when you were folding the laundry and you turned the lights out. When you pull the clothes apart they would spark like crazy! But, other than that, static on clothes is NOT fun...

hello reinydawn
i have never played with static electricity up under the blankets like that before when that i was growing up, but i remember that i used to take balloons and i would blow a balloon up and then take the balloon and rub it on my hair, and then the balloon would kinda stick to the wall for a few seconds. lol did you ever try the balloon trick with the static electricity before like that? and i hate it still when i go to get out of one of my vehicle's and the door will shock the fire out of me. lol that is bad static electricity when it does that. lol and if i remember correctly my brother used to rub a sock over the balloon and try different things to rub on the balloon to see if those different items would stick to the walls. lol we sure had some great times growing up as kids. lol
take care and have a beautiful evening.

Yes! I've even done the balloon trick as an adult for parties!!! We used to rub our feet on the carpet and then run up to someone and touch them to shock them. Yeah, being a kid was great!

Ha Ha! Yes..Good question.I have not thought about this in a while. When I was a a kid I remember touching the dryer or a door knob and being popped a little ..Its kinda scary but a thrill..lol..I would also take a ballon and rub it against the carpet and take uncooked rice ,put on the floor and watch how the static electricity wold cause the rice to stick to the ballon.I would also rub my feet with socks on the carpet and pop one of my friends...Young scientists!

We used to "pop" each other all the time. When it would get really dry, my mom would set pans of water on the heater to moisten the air. We didn't like when she did that because we couldn't shock each other as well :)

hi reinydawn no I never did that as we lived in so uth Dakota and in the summertime when it gets too hot we had lightening and thunder storms really
'fierce ones and the air in our house was even full of static electricity
too. s o touch a door knob and you got shocked even combing your hair on a stormy afternoon could give you a shock. so I did not mess with the stuff at
all.I have seen electricity split trees in half and knock people off
their feet so I learned to fear the stuff.
