default loans

i have a student loan that is in default. i try to get the collection agency to work with me on a reasonably payment plan but they won't. can anyone tell me what to do? how can i get it out of default?

if you've already gone to a collection agency, i'm not sure if you can do anything about it. have you checked into getting a deferment? if you have and you aren't able to do that at this point, you may want to try to refinance it into a different loan. i used to work in HR and if it is a federal student loan, they will eventually tack the payments right onto your paycheck. Even if it isn't, the collection agency can get an order through the courts to do the same thing. i would say check into refinancing into a personal loan or a credit card if you can. and you might want to check your laws because i thought if you were paying them, even a smaller amount that they can't take legal action against you, but i'm not really sure on that. good luck
