Scene Stealers

In the movie industry a scene stealer is someone who isn't supposed to get all of the attention, a minor person in the shot, who ends up "stealing" or getting all of the attention in the scene. However, we have these sorts of people in life as well.
You know these types. You share something wonderful in your life and they have to top it with something that has occured in their life, but with more gusto. Sometimes they are just people we work with them, sometimes friends, and sometimes they are family. I always find that those who are family are the most difficult to deal with because of the nature of the relationship.
I've tried everything from talking to them, to ignoring them and I just can't seem to find the best solution for the scene stealer, other then to let their own agenda or hand be shown so to speak. It's sad though, I think this goes along with people's ego fooling them into thinking that they must be number one always. That they must somehow be better then another person, instead of enjoying another person for the moment.
I can think of many times I've had to deal with scene stealers in my work as a teacher. Those are the ones who speak over you at a meeting stealing your thunder so to speak so as to make themselves look like it was their idea all along.
Do you have scene stealers in your life? What do you do about them? Is there a compassionate way to handle them?
