Why Oscar gives so many awards to Slumdog Millionaire?

This year's Oscar is really a big surprise to me.Although I've already seen the Slumdog Millionaire, and I enjoyed it a lot, still I'm doubtful about the eight awards it got. It's a brilliant movie with quite original way of telling stories, but is it really that great? How authoritative today's Oscar is in people's minds in the world?

I think it was a pretty good movie even if it was very unlikely... It was able to show a lot of parts of life which one may experience or go through in one's life...

Well the academy thought it was a good movie and what is wrong in giving it 8 awards?? maybe the competitors were not good enough and slumdog was a better choice... Atleast the awards of "best soundtrack","best song","best sound technician","best movie" and "best director" were justified... I do not know about the rest...
