I've been trying to watch a tv show on my laptop, but I keep getting hung up with a buffering? What and why is that, and can I get rid of it?

This is two sided problem. The connection you are using to get the inofmration. The server that is sending the information. this is a basically a log jam causing the machine to stop getting the feed. It goes into a waiting pattern called buffering until it can catch up on either end. There is no way around it, you can try viewing at different times or waiting until the show is not the most recent on the site.

i would suggest that you regularly defragment and an clean your disk. i would also suggest that you get yourself a registry cleaner, cclenaer will do, i use registryblue. to accelrate your video streaming i suggest that you download this software, speedbit video accelarator, this might help, i am not sure. Another suggestion to find some answers is to type in your queries on youtube and you will be surprise that you can find a lot of answers to your problems.

you can get rid of it if you get a faster broadband connection, buffering is like loading, or downloading data to your hard drive to show to you. i dont personally know dcmerkle but if its a program, go to control panel and remove it there with the add/remove programs.
