silence in conversation, what would you think and do?

If silence happens in a conversation, what would you think and do at that time?
To me, it is a rare situation. I am the one who can always keep the conversation going. When silence happens, I may try to find a new topic. If that silence tells me I have to stop, then I keep silent myself.
Today, one of my friends told me that "one of the way to torture people is to keep silent".

It depends on the situation. Sometimes, it can be awkward & so you want to fill the silence - but other times, we don't feel obligated to keep the conversation going and the silence is comfortable.
When I'm with friends, I usually like to fill the silence - and I can usually do so with no problem. I'm in college now & I rarely see my old friends - so we literally NEVER run out of things to talk about, which is a plus. =)

Last evening, I talked with a professor at the dinning hall. He told me that it's a good topic because it's something that is disappearing. Thank you all for your encouragement because lately I don't really know how to go on with this dissertation.
That's the same case to me too. My friends are kind of talkative as I do. We just keep talking every time we meet. It seems that we have endless list of things to share. And I enjoy those time by preventing silence from getting in.

Some silences are okay, while others can be awkward.
Now i'm not really that talkative and sometimes like it to be silent.
Now idk how to deal with the awkward silences so much and
usually try to do the same thing as you and come up with a new topic to talk about.
But silence is basically invitable, you can't keep talking forever.

That's true. We can't keep talking. The situation for my friend is that she's so talktive that she was told to stop! I am not that talktive but kind of similar.
