Sounds to me like he was trying to cheat you to make some extra cash. Thats messed up. If he didn't know the destination, he should have asked.

I don't want to judge that driver but the way I read events through your discussion, he seemed has done it to you, unfortunately. There are many drivers like him in cities here in the Philippines, particularly in Manila and Cebu. Once they detect that the passenger is new to the place, then they'll do such modus operandi.

First of all you were cheated! By driving around, he added time and mileage that raise the price of your ride. I know, I use to drive a cab. What he should have done with cut the fare for his mistake. However I do not believe it was a mistake. He had an option to make it right, he did not. You have an option to report him to the PUC or taxi commission in your city and to the cab company.

i won't say that the taxi driver was innocent by doing that to you or to any passenger. if he is an experienced taxi driver, the reason he gave was really a nonsense for me. even from your subject, you are asking whether he is cheating or fooling on you (not asking whether he is innocent or cheating). so i believe that you saw something about his attitude that you are unable to describe it here (maybe his cunning face, lol). i wonder whether he gave you any discount after he apologized to you?:D

This is bad. In fact sometimes I experience the same like you. Although I was born and grow up in my city, but actually I have a bad direction and I often get lost to somewhere I am not very familiar with:) So when I am in the taxi, I pretend to know everything well. If the driver asks me which road we shall go, I usually ask him to go to the road which has less traffic jam:) Here if you keep the receipt, you can complain about the taxi driver if you think you are cheated. So next time you may also keep a receipt so that if the taxi driver makes you angry again, you can do something for yourself. I love China
