I wash all my ziplock bags but the writing comes off

I wash my ziplock bags, that is the freezer bags and there is usually someplace where one can write what is on the bag. I use one of those permanent markers, well I did it today (I do the same on the glass and empty peanut butter containers I use to store my dry ingred. plus the empty spice jars), and the bag was a little stained inside so I washed it. Guess what? The ink came off. So I was wondering what do you do to make sure that the ziplock or glad freezer bag you pick out of the freezer is not the wrong one. It seems the pork and chicken pieces look the same, especially if they have been cut up.

I've noticed that, I can't tell the difference between pork and chicken when it's frozen! You could color code them by adding plastic pieces (bread wrappers, golf tees, etc.) to the insides of the bags--maybe blue for chicken and yellow for pork. Or you could write a P or C on a piece of foil and put it inside. You would also use colored rubber bands around each package, thick for chicken and thin for pork.

Maybe using masking take and using a marker that way it will stay on.. Or using different color tapes for different meats..I have seen some colored tapes in Yellow,white,green,red,pink,etc.. and other colors that might help..color code things makes it easier to know what it is. Make sure the bag is dry while trying to put on the tape though and sometimes I will put all the chicken in one bag by itself and same for the other meats.

I just put the first letter of what i am freezing on the bag. So far, they have not wiped out, but then I have to wait until I wash the bag.

It is just the pork and chicken thighs that get mixed up. The rest is easy.

I know a lot of people who wash their zip lock bags in order to save money..I have at times washed mine if it was just used for a time & seemed fine to use over again...I am living alone so i really do not need to do that now because my cooking has went down so much since it is only me...I supposs you could just use the marker to reuse the bag....I have also saved jars like you do to put dry ingredients in,they come in very handy at times....I also use my empty medicine jars to store safety pins & small things, i just remove the label & use a marker to put what is in the bottle...they are good for buttons, staples, paper clips etc....

There are two of us, so when I buy ground round, and stew meat, I divide them up into two person qualities. I also use Mason jars, and the empty peanut butter jars to store dried goods. I also have a couple of tupperware for my spaghetti. I would like to get some glass storage jars to store the dried ingredients though.

i re wash mine too, but i don't over use them, after a little while you should dispose of them, because it's not very sanitary, especially if meat of fish have been in them.

Usually by that time, the zipper no longer work or part of the plastic peels off, so they are not that good anyway. I figure they last for about five times at the most.

I use special plant labeling markers that are available at garden centers... they don't wash off, or at least, they have not yet. I believe they have a different chemical makeup that allows them to adhere to the plastic better. It's worth a shot. I do like the idea of the color coding, but tape seems to dry up and fall off on occasion in our freezer.

I have tried scotch tape and it comes off. I will see if I can get those plant labeling markers because the regular Cd markers do not work. They come off.

A piece of tape does the trick. Use masking tape and tape it to the bag. Another trick would be to put each type of meat in a basket so you know what your pulling out of the freezer.

I can try that, the masking tape, but I find with the basket thing, that sometimes I have to sort things out and then I forget in which basket I put it.

I re-use storage bags (not when they have been used for meat) and after I dry them I just put a large P or C, with CD marker, on them and it stays on the bag until I use it then I throw them out.

if you ar to use a ziplock instead of a plastic container then i suggest that you make a separate label wrapped on another plastic packet and insert it inside your ziplock. in that way no ink will be exposed and it won't get erased.

Hi suspenseful,
I don't use ziplock for chicken and pork, I just wrap them with plastic according to the cut I want or by piece....So, I don't need to mark it.
Or how about if you will write it in a piece of paper and paste it with masking tape, the transparent one! I haven't tried that but I hope it will work!

After you wash the bags, just rewrite what you put in them on the bags or use masking tape and write on that. I wash/reuse my ziploc bags as well but the writing rarely comes off. Wonder why it came off your bags.

I used Cd markers on them. I guess I had to use the permanent markers. Anyway I redid it, and this time it stayed, but I just put the first letters, like B S for beef stew (no not for the other thing.

That is very resourceful of you washing the ziplock bags like that. I suppose they are reusable if you get the good quality ones.
Permenant markers will wash off plastic. They are only permenant if you use them on fabric etc.

I am not sure if this will hurt or harm the food so before taking my advice, and of course that is if you do, please get opinions on whether it's safe or not... Using a sandwich bag, put the pieces of say pork into that, and then into the freezer bag, thus separating them still, and that way you can also tell which is which! I hope that this suggestion helps!
