The Simpsons - a family show?

I just got back from ten weeks with my daughter's family in Perth, Australia, and was amazed at the inuendos, and straight out rudeness of The Simpsoms on television. My daughter has two daughters, aged ten and seven, and they watch the show nearly every night, and pick-up the rude and impolite antics of this cartoon family. What do you think? Is it a family show, and I'm just out of it? Or do you agree with me, and think it should, at least be rated for older audiences?

hi mipen...it's misleading being a cartoon. but many cartoons are not for children. that's why parental supervision is so important.

I agree that parents should supervise what their children watch. However, I don't think the TV programmers should schedule it at children viewing time. As most topics covered are over the heads of ten year olds. Thanks for your input.

I am from Perth too and I can totally relate to your discussion about the Simpsons. My daughter is seven and she adores the show and because I don't watch much television I was not aware of how rude that cartoon was until I saw my daughter running around while pulling down her pyjama pants singing "Eat my shorts!" My sister has given her a couple of Simpson DVDs so that didn't help! I have watched it now and I do agree that it is not as innocent as I thought and I know this sounds lame but she is a good kid and I don't have the heart to stop her from watching it. We have explained that Bart's behaviour is funny but unacceptable in the real world and for the time being at least she has stopped mimicking him. It should have been on at a different time slot, I agree.

Yes, it's difficult to teach children table manners when they watch the Simpson's also.

The Simpsoms are not for young audience. I don't watch TV, so hard for me to say what language they use, but it was created as perfect cartoon for adults...

I love the simpsons. I have started watching it when it first came out. I think I was like 10 or something. Most other cartoons are the same way though. Have you sat through Sponge Bob. I can't believe he has been around for 10 years now. The Simpsons like to tackle political situations. Such as, there was one episode where Bart made a friend with a Muslim boy from Jordan. Bart defended the little boy to the bullies and even to Homer. Homer's friends put it into his mind that all Muslims were terrorist. Which is so not true. But anyways with Bart's insistance and youthful innocence, it shows tolerance that every human being should learn and that stereo typing is wrong. That is my fave episode. You can watch it on Hulu. I think it's called Boom sticks and Genies.

Thanks for your response. I agree that they tackle many current affair topics, and personally I love them. However, I don't think the 6.30 - 7.30 time slot is an appropriate time schedlue, as the topic is over the head of most kids. I'll check out that episode, and see if I can download it.

I love the show. I always have and I've been watching it since I was a kid. It didn't make me violent or more likely to act out.
