AFi"s Top Ten Epics

I agree (only) with the 1931 "All Quiet"; I don't normally like war movies, but this is an exception, so moving. The remake was good too! I like lesser known such as the 1967 film adaptattion of "Far from the Madding Crowd" by John Schlesinger. I gravitate most towards romantic epics. Growing up as a kid in the '60s I saw so many epics; I loved them; a special favourite was "The Sand Pebbles". And what of comedy epics such as "It's a Mad, mad, mad etc."? Epics will never die because you really get value for money. A fine recent epic was "A River Runs Through It". Although perhaps not technically an epic; not sure. Shakespearean epics? There are many of them; Branagh's "Henry V" outstanding. The epic is a real public favourite and many score at the Academy Awards. David Lean...king of the epics? He covered so many types of epic. Some worked for me, others not. "East of Eden" (1954) another outstanding epic from the '50s but it's hardcos very many of the greatest movies ever made have been on an epic scale; perhaps even "Citizen Kane" is an epic? And what of the great European epics such as "Les Enfants du Paradis". I could talk all day about epics because they have been among the greatest movies ever made!

I think Ben Hur is more favored by many as the best compared by Lawrence of Arabia. My picks are (inorder of my choices): Ben Hur, Titanic, Gone with the Wind and Lawrence of Arabia. I much favored Saving Private Ryan as the best against Schindler's list, well they are both directed by Steven Spielberg anyway.
