It is 6am where I am (I am actually still awake, I have a weird sleeping schedule) and a car alarm has been going off for over an hour! This is a regular occurrence on my street. I live in Cairo and the streets are very crazy. Cars lined on both sides of a street that should be a one way, but is really a three way if you know what I mean. We have so many stray animals outside I'm sure anything could have set it off. Possibly the call for prayer may have done it... This ever happen where you guys live? btw I know it's not my car because mine isn't nice enough to have an alarm system lol

I know exactly what you mean. We just returned to the US after having lived 3 years in Heliopolis. It is amazing how quiet our neighborhood is here, all the time. In Egypt things would really get cranking outside about 10-11 PM. We lived right across the street from Nadi Shams, the biggest sports club in Africa and the Middle East, and boy was that noisy. Even our 10th story flat wasn't far enough away from the street.

You can say that again! Do you live in Maadi? I was in Heliopolis.

That sounds even nosier than where I am here. Most people here say that our neighborhood is considered to be quiet at night, according to Egyptian standards. You are the first person I have met on here that has lived in Egypt, it sure is an experience.

aww. three way lol... here in the Philippines, they just park their cars on the road side especially on places where there are no parking regulations so what happens??? it becomes 4 way lol I work till 11pm here in the city so my sleeping habit tends to be on the nocturnal side lol. And the city is alive at night so it is still noisy even at the early hours of the morning I'm a light sleeper so I easily wake up with the tiniest noise... It's difficult but I guess I got used to it... hmm... is there any custom made noise cancelling ear plugs around? hahaha kidding... I hope you get to sleep soon... hugs... ^_^

Lol, I see you get me on the street thing. Sounds like the Philippines streets may be similar to Egypt's, no regulations here either. I am getting used to most of the noises too, there is so much activity outside 24hrs a day. It can be noisy, but also keeps life interesting. When I lived in the USA I was in a small town, never had problems like this. Thanks I did finally get some sleep...the car alarm stopped about 30mins later.

Night owl, huh? LOL. Thank goodness, that USED to be the way my neighborhood was, very noisy, very busy and hectic no matter what time of day or night. And even in my building it would be noisy. I used to have a neighbor who would have loud wild parties until 5 in the morning..she's since toned and quieted down. And yes, car alarms would always be going off. Considering it's a Saturday nite tonight, is eerily quiet..thank goodness!

so everyone goes to mosque or whatever it is when they have a call to prayer? they can't just do it in their houses. a national call to prayer sounds very odd to me. that's a little too much control for my tastes. I couldn't live there.

The prayer call is just to alert people that it is time to pray...I hear it everyday 5 times a day (I think I'm used to it). You can pray in your home if you want, some people go out and go the Mosque. Most women stay in their home, they have to find a Mosque with a womens only room so its not always easy for them. I think the whole Middle East and North Africa have this practice of prayer calling. In fact even in the good ol' US of A in Dearborn, MI they have a Mosque that does prayer calls.
