Leaderboards and Levels for discussions

Ok, I get the discussion ranking thing, well sort of, but what is the deal with the leaderboards and levels? I guess get the leaderboard part in that those discussions are in the lead? I don't get the differences in the levels for the boards though. Has anyone cracked the code so to speak for myLot and figured out how everything works?
