DND - do not disturb

I don't understand why people use this status message on their chat/ym accounts. If you don't want to be disturbed, then you shouldn't be online, right? Or you should at least log in as Invisible. Is there something I'm missing? I understand Busy because that means that it's up to the discretion of other people if they'll message you or not - they probably won't message you if they think what they were to say was unimportant. But DND is like "piss off" right? So what's up with that? Why be online when you don't want anyone to disturb you?

Well, perhaps they're online for someone else. It may be they're waiting for a particular friend, or perhaps they're just listening to shout-cast or perhaps they want people to see them (for attention's sake) but they have their reasons and if you get angry by that, then that's your problem right? I used to think like you before, I thought they'd be wasting their time just going online to tell everyone else that they're busy. But when it happened to me, I was waiting for an aunt to be online and I couldn't be invisible because she might not see me (well the invisible mode for each wasn't available back then) so I had to be online for all to see. So, I just put a message there saying 'do not disturb, waiting for my aunt'. Soon people would ask me 'which aunt?' and I end up just answering their questions, so I learned my mistake and now I just put 'don't disturb' and people get it. So, if you are irritated by people who put that status in their IM, then put them below your list, or perhaps just delete them. So that you won't see and thus making your day a negative one. I'm sure they have reasons for it, apart from being childish and wanting attention, right? Good luck! Happy Mylotting!

well that's a good explanation. I'm not really angry - I just didn't get it. But now that one can specifically be offline/online visible/invisible for a specific person then that would be the better option, right? It's "for the sake of attention" that I basically don't agree with.

I do not see any problem with that. A person who uses such a status message may be busy at some other work and is expecting someone at the same time. Or he may not want to talk to a particular person or any person.Being invisible would make it difficult for him to get his desired person on to the chat.I have done this for many times ,so far i have not seen anybody having problem with that.

Just because no body mentions it, it doesn't mean it's not bothering anyone :) And I think you failed to read the previous responses before you posted your own because I further described the situation and the others understood it better :P If there is only one particular person that you want to talk to, isn't it better to sign in as invisible and to change your stealth settings (supposing on YM) to Available only for that person?

yeah i kinda agree with you. if you really do not want to be disturbed then you shouldn't on your IM or just be invisible. but hmm...maybe some people just want to let others know that they are indeed online but however, are currently super busy and not available for chat at that moment?
