I don't speak Chinese, and only speak a little Spanish. I do have a good friend of mine that is taking Japanese as a second language. My wife is fluent in French. I guess I'm just the late bird of the bunch. I do like to look up spanish words and terms, using a translator service that decifers the meaning in English for me. I find it helps me become familiar with the meanings of certain Spanish words. I don't have any Chinese friends so I haven't be able to reach out to that particular culture's language as of yet. I love learning new and exciting things though so, I wouldn't mind the opportunity to learn a new language from someone who spoke that language. I guess there are many other people looking to step into the arena of foreign language because a lot of jobs are being outsourced overseas and it takes knowing that particular language in order to continue being marketable.

Honestly, I've never really thought of learning the chinese language. The two most common languages where I live are English and Spanish. I took two years of Spanish when I was in high school but I can't speak it very good. I can say some words in Spanish but not a whole lot anymore. I think Chinese would be a hard language to learn. But if we had a lot of people here that spoke it I might would try to learn it.

Not chinese but I had thought of learningjapnese, I ahve heard its really difficult to learn and it takes almost fourteen years to learn all o its alphabets too. It would be an intersting thing to learn it. These days I am working on my sanskrit and hope to read the four vedas in the language they were written in. Lets see if I am able to do so.

I am a Filipino and I am interested in Chinese. In fact, we are considering our child to study in a chinese school because time will come (and in fact it's already coming) that Chinese language will dominate.

I don't believe that. I think English does and will dominate. English is mandatory in Chinese schools. And Chinese is more difficult to learn, pronounce and write than English. English is the ultimate slacker language. It was built to be quick, easy and efficient and world is getting lazier and more impatient every day. Why I wonder do you think that Chinese will dominate?

I want to learn chinese particularly the mandarin 'taiwanese'. Im actually a beginner, because i already started it since i was in first year college, i did buy some good book for basic taiwanese, but i dont have time to finish to read the book, im just too lazy lately. Not only mandarin, i do a beginner for korean hangukmal, japanese nihongo, and filipino tagalog and bisaya. I cant say im a good learner, but i mastery the basic conversation, the simple ones. lets say how to introduce my self in taiwanese, hangukmal, nihongo, filipino, especially in indonesia, i can be pretty good in doing that. Its simple and easy to say... hello, hi, good morning/ good afternoon, good evening, my name is manya, how are you, im fine, thank you, pardon me?, im sorry, im 22 years old, im a student and im learning the language. I do know some basic language to ask someone to give me something like in korean: apple coosaeyo!- give me apple... where, when, who, what, why, what happen, i dont know, i know, i understand, i see, i cant understand, i like it, i dont like it, i love it, i dont love it, i enjoy it, delicious, nice, good, handsome, beautiful, great, even the bad words! Im learning the language from reading the "pinyin" and "romanji", because im not good in reading the kanji japanese, or korean and taiwanese letters. Im good in listening the sounds just by watching the movies, dramas, and also listening the song. I tried also to mimic how people in particular language speak. Just like korean accent, japanese accent, and taiwanese accent. filipino accent is just like other malayan, so i have no trouble with the accent. For me, im in learning for korean letter but im not good in read them faster, i still need to be more familiar with them. and its easier than japanese and taiwanese letters, because the way korean write is the way to read. Japanese and taiwanese letters are mor ecomplicated and i should follow the rule how to write it, while korean, i can write as long as its shape is correct and readable.

I would love to learn to speak Chinese. You are correct about the language becoming more and more popular and I believe it really would be a good idea if we all learned to speak it. My husband's first wife was Taiwanese, not Chinese but close! He learned quite a lot of the Chinese language, which he has attempted to teach me aeveral times. Unfortunately, it just doesn't stick in this poor old tired brain of mine. I love going out to a Chinese restaurant because my husband always says "thank you" in Chinese to the waiter, which almost always brings a big smile to his or her face. I'm sure they don't hear many Caucasian people speaking Chinese! It IS a hard language to learn. I used to think that English was the hardest language to learn because, even though I was an English major, even I am baffled by it sometimes. We have many words that sound the same but are spelled differently and mean very different things, then we have words that are spelled similarly, but spoken completely differently. Also, there are so many contractions and slang words associated with the English language! BUT, I do believe that Chinese is even harder to learn since it is not just the words themselves but the WAY they are pronounced that makes a huge difference. One of my husband's and my favorite TV shows (which we only see in re-runs now since the show was cancelled years ago) is called "Firefly". In that show, both English and Chinese are spoken (although the majority is English). I would LOVE to know what they are saying when they speak in Chinese! (There are no captions to help!) The two greatest countries in the world, I believe, are the United States and China, so it makes sense to learn Chinese if you are American and vice versa. But, the way my brain works, I think I'll just need a translator. Sigh!

Since I've been living in Mexico it has been hard enough for me just trying to learn to speak Spanish. My problem is my memory. I don't know if it's my age or what , but I can't remember new words I hear from day to day. I sure couldn't handle taking on another language .. no way ! I've heard that English is the hardest language to learn. I don't know if it's true or not .

I love languages but I can only speak two and one of them is not Chinese! I have always been fascinated by the lettering also. It would be great to be able to read Chinese writing! Unfortunately it is not something that I will be doing in the near future because time does not permit. I'll put on my “bucket list" (LOL)

Hi, Being a Chinese, I think learning Chinese is important and I am glad that I am given the chance to learn Chinese in the past. However, I am only good at spoken Chinese but not written Chinese as I hardly write in Chinese anymore. I still read Chinese newspapers or other materials so that I will not forget all the characters. I think some Chinese characters are difficult to learn as there are many strokes in them. I think the easiest way to start learning spoken Chinese is to start with watching Chinese dramas that have English subtitles. The language that I would like to learn is Korean as I enjoy watching Korean drama.

I would love to learn new languages and I am also a fast learner. I have however not considered Chinese as it sounds really complex and yes, the characters are way too many. I have to admit though that they really look artistic and intriguing. Given a chance, I would definitely love to learn Chinese. I am also interested in Chinese culture as they have a great history and I would love to learn some martial arts . And I just love Chinese food Chinese Chopsuey yummy

I haven't quite explored about Chinese classes near my house. I am sure I might find them, but I need to squeeze some time out for it. I guess it is easy to learn online but it is difficult to have a conversation and correct the pronunciations.

No I can honestly say I have never thought about learning Chinese and to tell you the truth at this point in my life I would not as I do not have much use for it as I do not live close to a Chinese neighborhood! I happen to agree with you, I would think that Chinese would be one of the most difficult languages to learn to speak, read and write and I was not good at all when it came to learning languages when I was in school. Shoot, I'm American born and I think I'm lucky to be able to speak English because languages were so hard for me! :D

No offense, but I think Chinese language seem so noisy when spoken. I mean, I am basing on the movies that I saw. I don't know, is it the actor that is noisy or the way their language is spoken. For me I prefer to study Japanese. They would be paying you if you know how to speak their language. And also, I want to learn it so I won't be relying on subtitles when I watch anime's.
