Do you buy expensive cellphones to impress those around you? Do you also get embarassed to use an inexpensive cellphone in front of others? Do you want the cellphones to serve a different purose than just its functionality?

Yes it is also a status symbol and I am tech savvy so basically I check my emails on my cellphone while on the go.

a cellphone to me is just a communicative tool, no more than that ! while my watches and handbags are my symbol of my status. i only choose the cheapest cellphone, if it is free, i won't spend one dollar on it now !

I have tried using about six cellphones for the past five years that I have been using cellphones. My first was Nokia 3310 for three years then it was followed by Nokia 2600 for one year. When I got married my husband gave as a birthday gift to me a new Sony Ericsson W300i. Since then I never get back to Nokia phones. After two months I got his Sony Ericsson K530i because he upgraded to a Palm Treo. After six months I got the best phone and most expensive during that time which was Sony Ericsson C702. I was very happy because I enjoyed the game installed in that phone plus the fact that the camera is good. It has I think 3.2 megapixel and has flash and autofocus. After a month he sold my phone because of an emergency then I got Sony Ericsson K800i. It is still a good phone but of not as latest as the C702. After two months I changed it to Sony Ericsson Z310i and that is a major downgrade. He even sold his Ipod Touch and we were quite sad about it. The reason is not to show off to others but because we were very satisfied with the phone functionalities. If you can see there is an upgrade in my cellphone trends as well as my husband because we really love trying and discovering latest or not cellphones. Now I still have the Z310i and I am wishing for the Sony Ericsson T700. I told myself that I will really save for that because at this time I can't afford it. My husband is very happy with his Sony Ericsson P1i. Anyway the main point is not to show off again but to have an experience and know the differences for knowledge. It is a hobby to compare within ourselves how good one cellphone is from another. And we always know that cellphones' purpose is for texting and calling but we can't stop technology from adding and adding more to the functions that a cellphone can do.

No, fortunately I do not have any such mental blocks relating to cell phones, infact I pity those people who buy expensive cell phones not because they are comfortable with it but just to push off an image to those around them I think its repulsive of many people to do so. Ofcourse, an E-series Nokia looks okay with a business man who is busy but with an arts student- it sucks big time and I think it is extremely inappropriate. So I guess that above paragraph would let you know that for me an expensive cell phone can never be a status symbol. Moreover, too many people whether lower class, middle class all have expensive cell phones with them so one really cannot call another person with an expensive gaudy phone as a cut above the rest. It really takes something more subtle than a cell phone to make people admire you and earn their respect. As they say anything easy does not last long, so similarly anyone can buy a phone and flaunt- it really does not take that much character.

To me my phone just serves a purpose, from many yaers of needing one for buisness, it's just that a tool. I know loads of people need the latest, but the problem whan just trying to impress, the top of the line phone now wonn't be in 6 months, they'll be something cooler, same with alot of technology.

No i did not buy expensive phone in order to impress somebody or my friend, actually my phone is 3 years old already, and no plans to buy new one. for me it very important to save money rather than to impress anybody. and i did not feel embarrass with my phone.

I used to have an expensive cellphone, not for the reason of impressing people around me, but because of its functionality. My work demands that I have access to emails all the time and have files accessed through my phone. But when I resigned from work and now that I am a plain housewife, I sold my expensive cellphone and bought a simple cellphone. Anyways, all I need now is a phone that I can use for texting and calling.
