Settling In

I just finally got back online! What a nightmare the past couple days have been!
We moved in on Sunday... 1 day to move everything we had. It wasn't too bad, we used my husband's work truck and were able to do it all in 3 trips. Unfortunatly we had no help, so we were exhausted by the end of the day, and sore all over, but we were done around 4pm.
We did run into a couple snags along the way, and the move was not as smooth as we would have hoped. Our first snag was that we could not catch one of our cats. I only have a small cat carrier, so I could only bring one cat at a time. I caught the first two and moved them to the new house, but when we went back the third time, our last cat was in hiding... outdoors somewhere. We went back to the house a few times Sunday but could not catch him. Hubby went back very late that night, and finally got the cat indoors, but could not get him in the carrier, and he ended up with some large scratches on his hands. I went back first thing Monday morning, but the cat had found himself a good hiding spot, so again I was unable to capture him. Then I could not leave during the day Monday because I was expecting the phone company to show up, and the maintenance men had to do work on the house... but around 5pm I went back and FINALLY caught the cat and brought him home. It was a pain, but I got him in the end which is all that matters.
Next problem was the water. I have all new plumbing in the house, and unfortunatly due to the cold weather, all the pipes froze. I was the first to take a shower Sunday night, and even the drain was froze, so no one else was able to shower!! I had to keep the kids home from school on Monday due to this. The maintenance men spent all day Monday working on the water, and got the bathroom pipes working, but not the kitchen. Then yesterday they had a water problem in the entire community, so everyone was without water. The workers had to fix that, so could not see to my kitchen faucets. I didn't get water in my kitchen until today!! I had lots of dishes piled up!!
The phone was supposed to be turned on Monday by noon. Nobody ever showed up. My husband called yesterday morning and they said they'd show up yesterday... still no. Today finally they showed up around noontime!
So I went 3 days with no water, no phone, no internet!! Needless to say I was totally freaking out. I couldn't leave my house for fear the maintenance men or the phone company would finally show up! I spent all day Monday worrying about my cat, and couldn't go get him, then spent all day yesterday just livid that I couldn't do dishes or anything, and couldn't call anyone to figure out what was going on.
Today thankfully everything is better. I have my phone, my internet, and my water. The only thing the maintenance men still have to do is my washer/dryer hook ups, but there are still families in the community with no water, so that's first on their agenda of course. My laundry will just have to wait!
Hope you guys didn't miss me too much!! How have things been while I was gone?

I spent all day Sunday in the car or at my Grandfathers wake, so I was not online at all that day either. Not too much has been happening since then though. I have had some orders to fill and a cranky kid to deal with, but that is about it.
Glad to hear today has been treating you better than the few previous days had. Finish getting settled in. We will all be here when you get back.

Our last home had a lack of closet space as well, only 3 closets... not even a linen cabinet... so I've sort of gotten used to it. The baby's have never used closets, and I hung wire shelving in the bedrooms... 1 shelf for each person (except the babies). So it's not so bad. It doesn't even really look bad either.

Well since I had nothing better to do on Monday or Tuesday, I spent both of those days unpacking, and am almost done. Mostly I need to organize. I have more stuff than I have space to put it, so I've gone out and bought some organizational tools, such as shelving and cabinets, etc. I still have to buy some wire racks to hang our clothes on since we have no closets at all.

Gosh! What a saga!
I know what it's like moving cats and how frustrating, on top of everything else, it must have been that the third one was so difficult about the move. Are they happy now they are in the new house or have they not settled yet?
How did you fix the children in the end - who is sleeping with who? (I'm nosey but I do remember yousaying you hadn't decided before the move itself).

The cats are all doing well now. They seem to have adjusted just fine, and they seem very happy with the new home, and thankfully they aren't at all eager to go outside (not allowed outdoors here, there are traps and a busy road).
So far as sleeping arrangments.. at the moment I have the 3 older boys sharing a room, and my daughter is sharing with the youngest boy. We will have to move things around a bit just as soon as they finish with the washer/dryer hook up, because that will be in my daughter's room, and she has the smallest room of all. We're working on getting the oldest 2 boys a bunk bed, and if we do there should be room in there to fit the baby's crib as well, so we may have all 4 boys in one room, while my daughter is smooshed into the laundry room. Otherwise it doesn't seem like my daughter's bed and the crib will fit in there with the washer and dryer! Ugh!!

Hopefully I'll get back in the groove of things soon. It's difficult dealing with the dial up, and I can't be online nearly as much as I used to, especially not when the kids are in school, I can't tie up the phone line.

Moving can be rough. Now you don't have to freak out. Being without water is rough. Having to stick around for the maintenance guy can be annoying. Just look at it as a laundry holiday!

I'm not allowed laundry holidays when I have 7 people to wash for. Since Sunday I've probably racked up at least 5 loads, and all the bedding needs to be washed, and all the coats are dingy from moving on Sunday! I hope they have the washer/dryer hooked up for me tomorrow.

I've basically been unpacked since 2 days after we moved in. I had nothing better to do those first 2 days because I had no phone or internet or anything. So I got it all done. The only things not yet unpacked are things that just don't have a home yet.

I am so glad that you are all moved in and the utilities are hooked up and all. You have the perfect plan with the idea of bunk beds. Always try to go up and not out when in a small area.
You are really a neat person to juggle the kids and the cats alone without putting the moving factor into the mix. Now all you need is a day at a spa somewhere. Wouldn't that be nice!
I heard once that if someone gives you a loaf of bread when you move into a new house, it means you will prosper. Soooooooo! I'm sending you a metaphoric loaf of bread and wishing you all the best in your new home.

Thanks for the bread! I've never heard that before, and I've never been given a loaf of bread when I moved into a new place. Someone did once bring some goulash either shortly after we moved into our last house, or shortly after I had the baby, which was only 2 months after we moved in.

Wow, you had some ordeal with your move. It is good to hear that things are starting to come together, and I am happy to know that you finally got your cat. Be careful because cats do not like change, and you do not want your cat to try to run away to the old place. In due time everything will be in order and you will finally be able to catch up on everything.

And the in laws still don't know we moved... not so far as I'm aware anyways. We do still have the same number, so they could call us, but we didn't hook the phone up until just now so if they called, we wouldn't know. Hubby hasn't gone over to tell them off yet. He wants to, but now I'm not so sure he should. I think maybe we'll just wait and let them figure it out for themselves.
