Winning money in competitions

I watched this television program once about this fairly elderly couple who were extremely wealthy. Neither of them had worked for decades. Instead they just spent all day every day doing various different competitions, as many of them as they could get and as many as they could do. They did all sorts, crosswords, quizes, phone compeptitions, television competitions, you name it, they were in it! The documentary was basically an account of how they had managed to win enough money every single month to be able to live quite comfortably off and not only that, they still had plenty of money left over. Is there anyone out there who has any kind of luck like this? I am quite amazed how a couple can live happily purely from income won in competitions, it's quite remarkable.

In any competition, be it the radio, television, phone, or paper it takes a lot of patience and luck to achieve that type of success. I mean, they're not actually gambling anything (perhaps a small fraction because these things do cost). Perhaps this is the best way for elderly to enjoy life and free themselves of Alzheimer's because their minds are working and they enjoy what they do. As for me, I'm neither patient enough nor lucky enough with these competitions, I've never won anything in my whole life. I guess they've been there long enough and have exercised their intuition with these stuff that's why they became very good at it.

In another discussion somewhere here on MyLot I answered a question saying that the only thing I had ever won was a bottle of whiskey when I was about ten years old. My dad had to accept it though and wouldn't let me have any (obviously). I've just remembered though, I actually won £5 ($10) when I was a very young kid too when I entered into a competition that a comic I used to read were holding. I guess some people are more lucky than others. Would be nice to be able to make a living from it though.

OH yeah, tell me about it. I've never won a single thing. I'm even wondering now how they do it, perhaps it's the averaging thing. Let's say for every 10 contests you win 1, so perhaps they've been into hundreds that's why they could live by it.

Would be interesting to know what the statistics for probability are, you could probably would out a system from that. I know there are systems you can use with gambling and things like that. For example, you can practise mnemonic techniques to improve your memory and then when playing Blackjack you can memorize the cards that have come out and by doing so you know which cards are left. I also know a few techniques for playing other games like Poker or Switch/Last Card though one technique is technically cheating.

I tried doing this for a while. I did win some little stuff, like a hat and a t shirt. Then one day I finally won $100. I read a book about it, and that's kind of how I started trying to do it all of the time. I can't remember the exact title, but it was something like How to be Lucky. Or something to that extent. The book told stories of people who were interviewed who had won numerous things and were constantly winning and it sounds about like the documentary that you seen. I believe it really works. The more you try, the more you win! Thanks for sharing the story with us!

Interesting. It's also funny how people that believe they are more lucky than others tend to have better things happen to them. I think I might have a go at this, after all I'm not going to lose much even if I fail.
