I have been writing online for a little bit now. I write for helium mainly. My question is, do you write for one topic usually, or do you find a topic on the main page of helium and then research then write? My articles are diverse and some are from personal experience. I have recieved comments on using the "I" in my articles. This is not always a good practice and can lower your rating. Here is some good news, my rating was 53% now, its 68% so Im getting better...on the verge of the 75% earning threshold.

Close to half of my articles belong to the Computers and Technology section, although I do write for other topics. My better performing articles (in terms of rank) also tend to come mostly from there. I think writing on topics I'm familiar with gives me an edge there. On Helium, where for some reason what appears to be a better written article with less typos and a better grasp of grammar doesn't always ensure that it'll be placed higher than an article riddled with grammar mistakes, I find that it usually boils down to which article has the better info. And being familiar with my topics, I already know where to search/look for info.

Sometimes I really get tired of the awful spelling and grammar mistakes over there...a lot of which are really basic things that any writer should know. I know that we are all human and make mistakes, but some people don't even proofread what they write. So frustrating!

I have notice that also. A good informative article might fare well, its not completely dependant on the quality of the article. This can sometimes be very upsetting for some writers. Happy MyLotting!!!

I usually search the titles for subjects I am interested in writing about. Sometimes when I am rating two articles, I will write about one of the topics. If I am interested in the subject matter and don't think that the articles I've read on the topic cover something I have to say about it, then I write my own take (usually these are more opinion pieces rather than articles that have to be researched). I would say that most of my articles fall into one the following categories: art history, investing, the workplace, travel. I love to write most about art history, but nobody (except maybe students doing research) read these. I recently discovered that you can do movie reviews and book reviews for Helium, so that may open up a lot more titles for me and my interests. What categories do you like?

Im partial to history articles. I really enjoy reading them. I like how things work also. I do not know if there is a category for that or not. But, I like to learn how items are made. More information I can absorb the better I feel. Happy MyLotting!!!

I just joined Helium about a week ago. Actually I just reactivated my account. I joined in 2007 and have not tried to write until now. I have only wrote three articles. My main interest is in scrapbooking and there are not a lot of articles there to choose from on that subject. My writing score is 63%. I do not have any stars. I am not real good at understanding it just yet, Especially the earning part of it. I probably need to write a lot more than I have though. Glad your rating is coming up. Have a blessed day.

Thank you for the nice comment. I really do enjoy writing and write daily. It is a passion of mine. I am sure that the more you write the better you become at it. I do still have a spelling or grammer mistake every now and then. That is why I use the forum for critiques, since I believe it is better to have a fresh set of eyes look at your writings. Sometimes you cant see your own mistakes.

I write on a variety of topics, a mix of what I know about, what interests me and what I want to know more about - because I enjoy learning from my research and writing about what I know. I have been writing at Helium for a year now so I can see which topics are better for earnings, and which of my articles do better in the ratings, and I can focus more on those topics. You can write in the first person, using "I" if the title asks for personal experience or recollection, otherwise you should try to write for the reader who is searching for information online. I wish you success with your articles. Helium really can help you to improve your writing skills.

I don't use Helium community for critiques but I have gained a lot of useful tips and information from the forum.

I believe that my writing has improved ten fold. I really enjoy writing articles for Helium. My ratings are going up, and I cant wait until I get my first writing star. Do you use the forum for critiques?

I don't really like Helium. I use Suite101 and Associated Content in addition to my personal blog. Basically, I write anything I like..whatever I'm in the mood for. However, recently I have tried posting a lot on education issues because I am applying for teaching jobs and want my name out there.

i used to write there too. until their expansion thing affected my logging in. i was a premium writer there when that happened. anyway, choose any title that you like. even if you choose the most researched topics if you don't really like it then, it would still not fare okay. reminder though: you may lose your ability to earn even if you reach your one star already if the result of your current writings drop down. that star is not permanent.

Thank you for your response. I know that the star is not permanent. I am working toward earning that star, I have not wrote a new article, but have leapfrogged my existing articles. Improved the ratings. I am thinking of writing a new article there tonight. Just wondering if I should just choose a topic, research it and then write. Happy MyLotting!!!

I have been writing to Helium for about a year and a half and just passed my 400th article, woo hoo.... I write on anything that grabs my eye and my heart. I don't only write to things that I know. Sometimes I venture into the unknown only to flop, but the good news is that there are so many people there willing to help that if you ask the question, they will answer and soon your writing ability rises and so do your scores. I also had to learn not to use the "I" word although sometimes it's impossible to avoid it. I have found that statements like "this writer" or other things such as that fare just fine. But if you change it to one simple letter "I" people will freak out on you in the scoring area. I would say expand a little on your knowledge base. There are many article titles that need little to no research. Others need a tremendous amount. But if you expand on your titles you also expand on your knowledge as far as writing goes. Does that make sense. I sometimes babble, that's why I am a writer.
