My husband has been trying to quit smoking for 3 - 4 months, he told me that he has cut way down cigarattes that he used to smoke a packet a day. He weighted himself two days ago and show me he has gained 20 pounds. Tow things, I don't know if it is because I have been feeding him good since we got married or qui smoking really makes you gain weight. Has anybody ever experienced it? I hope I can hear from your response! Thank you very much!

I quite smoking a few months ago,I have faced the same problem.I have gained some weight.Right now I am having a very hectic schedule that's why I have also lost some extra pounds.I don't know properly how I gained those extra pounds, but now after reading your discussions it seems that I got those weights due to quit smoking. But now I am happy as I am successful to quit it.

From what I hear and understand that if you quit smokeing you will put the weight back on. Now why that is-is that you have more of an appetite and want to eat more causeing you to put the weight on. I smoke alot and my weight is extremely low double digits and I know it's from smokeing my doctor has told the same thing and has asked me to quit. I told her when I'm ready to then I will. I have noticed and have tried the test and cut way back and saw some of the pounds come back on but got really stressed out and started smokeing alot again and my weight dropped and my appetite is pretty much gone to but yes it is true.

i believe gaining weight is the result of smoke quitting. its a tendency to eat rather than smoke. so some people have a post reaction in trying to divert their attention to anything and the easiest alternative to smoking is eating. i have a friend when she was trying to quit smoking, she usually cant sleep, she tried exercising however her saliva kept pouring out of her mouth. so the tendency is to chew a gum or eat a candy or 2 however for her, its just not enough to replace her smoking so she eat and eat and eat and eat!

i think he ought to be more worried if he continue smoking than if he continue to gain weight. cause i think as long as he does not gain too much weight it will just be fine. but i don't attribute the gain of weight that much on his decision to stop smoking. but in a way smoking makes a person thinner cause i think it helps digest food faster which disturbs the natural process of digestion. but it is still much harmful than gaining weight. so i guess he just have to learn how to limit his food intake if that is what he is much worried about . he should be commended for being able to stop smoking for some months now. and i am happy to hear that. that is one big accomplishments on his part. it is no easy task to do that. though i will say it is not easy to stop smoking, i have not smoked in my life. though i tried some few times. but didn't smoke one whole stick in my entire life. just short try and nothing more. but i can feel the struggle of people go through to stop smoking. so i didn't try to start this habit cause i don't to go through the struggle of learning to live without them. and i am so totally afraid to start to smoke because also of the bad effects of it. so i think sometimes i feel that we have to reward in many ways possible those who are able to doing well without those smoke any more. and and we shuold try to encourage them the more for their good and our good also cause we don't want to lose our loved early in life.

Quitting smoking would make a person gain weight but not 20 pounds but about 5 pounds but this weight gain doesnt really matter as to count the benefit the gains of quitting smoking and soon he can shed weight as after quitting smoking he can run for longer time as it would increase lung capacity and his BMR would increase and it would help in shedding weight more.

I know that some people will tend to eat more to fill that void of not smoking. My fiance has tried quitting numerous times and I noticed he ate more because he was "bored" and during that bored time he would normally go smoke. But, he's yet to quit completely. Goodluck with your husband!

It can. It's because smoking is an oral fixation, so a lot of times people who quit turn to something else. You could have him start carrying jelly beans or suckers. (Jelly beans were used by Ronald Regan when he stopped smoking. Telly Savalis used suckers, hence why Kojack always had a sucker in his mouth). You can also try sugar free candies, etc. It's just the fixation of having something in the mouth. And continue to eat well balanced meals a day. A trick my husband used when quitting was to say "If just for now, I won't smoke". He can use this with food as well, when he feels the urge to eat when he's not in need of food. Good luck. Anora

He won't try to eat candies or other stuff instead to quit smoking, he just tries to fight with the urge...

There is a connection between gaining weight and quiting smoking. I quit about 5 years ago. It was the best decision that I have ever made in my life. Yes I did put on some weight, but I would rather weigh the extra pounds, than be on an oxygen tank. My suggestion is that if you want to curve the weight gain, then exercise. Eat better, and remember that your gong to get hungry more when you quit smoking. So, you have to choose the right snacks. Steer away from the vending machines and eat some baby carrots or something. Also, try to be active 1 hour a day. Take a walk or join a gym. These are great ways to lose weight. If you have kids, go outside and play. All you need is to abide by the NFLs Play 60 program, and your going to lose. Good Luck!!!!

im not a smoker but i have known people that quit smoking and it made them want to eat more as a substitute for the smoking and in turn they gained some weight because of it and then they convinced themselves that they should just start smoking again i tried to convince them otherwise but some people just wont listen its definitely not an easy thing to do but you have to be committed to it and just try to watch what you eat and try not to over indulge when you do or you could put on some weight after you quit.

No, quitting smoking does not make you gain weight. Overeating of the wrong foods makes you gain weight. People who blame quitting smoking for gaining weight have mislaid the blame. The act of smoking doesn't surpress your appetite. If that were true there would only be skinny smokers. There are plenty of other things someone can do upon quitting smoking, like EXERCISE or MEDITATE that will help them through the adjustment period and not have a negative effect. Anyone who sees smoking as addictive behavior will have to spend their life in recovery and looking for alternatives to smoking even after quitting successfully for several years. The cessation of smoking has to be accompanied by a lifestyle change.
