Is DVD brand name a matter?

I recently bought a DVD player from HHGregg, with merely $45. What a great deal I considered at the moment. It plays all my recorded DVD, and I love it so much. I also suggest a friend of mine to get one. It was a Sony brand name. After he got to the store, all the Sony DVD players were sold out. I suggested him to get on with JVC brand name, it has the same function. He was reluctant to buy it, due to its brand name. Does brand name such a big deal to you when you purchasing an electronic item?
