site that i got the recipe from says at the bottom of the page. after all the directions it says: congratulations you are one of the few, one of the elite people that can cook tamales. no, i do not think i am special i just thought it would make a good subject stater to this discussion. we are in new mexico and have paid between $8-$10 for a dozen tamales. i love to cook so i decided to tackle the tamales. i found this really good site that tells you how to make them and went at it. they were so great. it really made me proud to because there is a lot of work in them. so, can you make tamales? i do not mean the ones in the can with all that red sauce which do not even touch what a tamale is, i mean the ones rolled in corn husks that you steam.

You will need a steamer pot to put them in. If you will steam the they will taste fresher than heating them up any other way. You can use a metal colander that will sit down in a pot and put water in the bottom and a plate and top of the colander and this will steam them it will just take longer than it would if you use a steamer pot. I did not know that you could buy them frozen. It does take work to make them but they are so good. I started a new batch last night and are steaming them right now. I made 72 of them. So I suppose that will be having tamales for a while. I will probably freeze some of them. Have a blessed day. Hope this helps you in some way.

Hi Susan , and Congrats on your tamales !! Now all your family and friends will be expecting them on Christmas and Easter and every other holiday ! haha ! Here in the Yucatan , Mexico tamales are made different then the ones in the States . They don't use corn husks . They use banana leaves, and they are alot different . Still good, but different .

Banana leaves to wrap them in. Well that is different. I wonder if it gives them a better flavor. One reason that I decided to make them is because there are people back home that want them and even @ $8 a dozen that could get expensive. Quick. So I figured that if I learn how to make them that it would be a lot cheaper on me to make them myself rather than to buy them. And by the time I get there they would not be good probably. I live 18 hours away from here.

hello susanshayavon yum, i will take one of your delicious homemade tamales. i bet that they are delicious. and i hear ya about those gross tamales in the can like that. they are nasty. i have eaten some good tamales before at different mexican restaurants. but i do enjoy cooking and i will try anything once, but i have never tried to make any homemade tamales like that before. i do not know if my boys would even taste them or not. i know that my eleven year old son wouldn't taste them, but my eight year old son would probably taste them, and might even like them. i have seen everything that is needed to make the homemade tamales with in our local grocery stores here in town. i might have to try to make some tamales sometime soon. take care and have a beautiful afternoon.
