It depends on what I am cooking. For dinner preparation, I measure with my hand and have been doing it for so long that I feel comfortable with it. Many baking recipes are more exacting. If I'm baking a cake, I usually grab the spoon for measuring.

For long means you would defntly be comfortable and know exactly the perfect measurements

Well I think that it depends on how much salt is being added. Even when cooking, the use of the salt shaker is fine, and you can see how much is being put it just the same if not better, sometimes it's easy to be wasteful when put into the hand as you may put too much, or too little, and then either need more, or have to put back what you can, possibly spilling some, and the rest washed off from your hand. Like I said though, it depends on the dish as to whether using the salt shaker is fine, or the hand, or spoon.

i use salt-shaker when i prepare omletts, other than that, i only put minimum salt first and then add if needed later on so that i dont spoil the food by adding more salt initially

I use my hands even in recipies that calls for so much amount of salt, I trust my han pinching skills than any cookbook...the reason I do this is because apart from salt, I also ise garlic salt and seasoning salt in my stews and other gravies, so I am the best judge when it comes to the final taste.

yes...but for baking all, you must use proper measurements right or do you use hands for that also?

I am always putting salt in my hand when I cook. The only time I really measure the salt is when I am baking and really don't have much choice.

I pour in the salt in with a spoon, as I know I won't get my hands cacked with salt if they are wet with not a towel in sight, and I can always shake some off, making it fall back into the container if I have miscalculated the amount Well, Happy-Mylotting..

i never touch the salt if my hand is wet, for we will take more salt than needed adn also, the salt will form clots when the water is present in the jar

I have always used a measureing spoon to measure salt when i add it to a recipe, but if you watch the cooking shows they always put it in with their hand. But then you see then with little bowls of spices setting out. Where we have our spices in cans or containers. I guess if you cook every day for big bunches then you can get to the point that you can be about sure how much a pinch or a teaspoon ful is. Me I just want to get it in the food and be done with it don't matter hand or spoon

For most things I will just pour the salt out of the container into my hand and then pour it in the pot or pan. The only time I really don't do it that way is when I am baking something and the amount of salt needs to be more accurate.

I use my hand. I don't tend to add a lot of salt to a recipe when I am cooking. For that reason, I simply pour a little bit out into my hand and take a pinch or two from that to add to the recipe.

when you dont want exact salting, your hands would be fine for you just need to sprinkle some over the food

Hi Sharay, I prefer using the spoon; at least I would know how much to use each time. If I use my hand or fingers, it's guessing like a pinch or 2 pinches - and I would most probably end up too much or too little salt.

too little salt would not be a problem as we always can add later, too much would just spoil the whole food

You might drop the spoon, thats really a very different reason than all of us here, anyways, our hands are best, arent they

i use table salt for cooking and also feel comfortable pinching the salt with my fingers. like you, it seems i could measure it well if i use my hand instead of the spoon. but for iodized salt, i use a spoon because they granulated.

I usually get salts through my hands, though I cannot really measure, I just put salt then if it is not sufficient I put some more.

I prefer Putting salt with my hand simply because I'm used to it and not only that I learnt that from my Grandma.........and from my old friend Nina, people do say putting salt with ur hand makes what u are cooking more delicious, more nutricious, more good and it equaly shows that u are very good in cooking i.e adapting to the main process of cooking in a modern society.

I use a spoon, My hands shake so much i'd be afraid of losing the salt if I used my hands. Besides how do you measure.

I really donno myself, i hope it comes by practise...it is not every time, i put it right, some days its less and some days more...so, i tend to put less first so that i can correct later

I definitely like using a spoon, because that way I feel like I know how much I am adding and I can try to always add the same amount each time. I have never tried using my hands before but I just imagine that it would a be bit confusing

Have always preferred hand to spoon. Most of the time the salt required is less than the spoon size & feel more in control when i use my hands. I learned my cooking from my mother. she always used rock salt from a big jar. Spoon was not an option here. so, i guess that i picked up the habit from her. I also teach in a catering college where we keep different size spoons for salt. This a especially useful for bakery products. Did i answer your question??? ( ha,ha...)

of course yes...if i have a set of different-sized spoons, may be i could try them...even my mother uses hands when she uses the sea salts and she often uses only that, whenever she has to use powdered salt, she uses a spoon, donno she gets that so well

I use a salt shaker, whenever possible. If it's a little, I might do it with my fingers, more, I'd use a spoon. A friend who had been to Russia, told me that over there they salt their food of the blade of a knife. I've tried it, and it works too.
