Yes, do you know? Well, I think you had better start knowing because I think, like me you are going to be taken quite aback with this headline on the Daily Mail (UK) which really speaks volumes.
Hospitals Spend Less On Their Patients' Food Than Prisons On Their Inmates
Could you believe this? I think I just flipped would be an understatement for me here, especially when this is actually happening in a medically renowned country like the United Kingdom. What is happening here?
I quote: "Some hospital patients have less money spent on their meals than criminals.
Last year, ten hospitals spent less on breakfast, lunch and an evening meal than the £2.12 a day allocated for food by the prison service. One hospital spent just £1.
Experts say cost-cutting hospitals are increasingly moving to soup and sandwiches to save money. Others are buying food that is prepared off site, frozen and then defrosted in the hospital.
The figures from the NHS Information Centre also expose shocking waste, with some trusts throwing away a third of meals entirely untouched.
A total of 11million meals a year are thrown away uneaten.
Earlier this week it emerged that more than 8,000 patients left hospital malnourished even though they had been admitted with no nutritional problems."
Wow! If this is happening in United Kingdom, I am just wondering for other countries as well and I cannot help recalling how friends had been into hospitals claiming that the food inside sucks. Seems like the missing piece of the jigsaw has just been found and it is really very sad and disappointing. How could these people be so annoyingly heartless and downright irresponsible? For goodness sake this is a medical institution and the patients there aren't there for a holiday or fun. How could they have done and continue to do such a thing? This article is indeed timely and I just hope that the relevant "idiots" would be weed out and ostracized. I know a number of you may deem that death sentences are barbaric but I do not think it is at all especially for these responsible "A" holes!
Take care.

Well it's your right to complain to the hospitals, doctors and nurses if you think they do not giving insufficient nutrients to you or to your patient.
Other patients still need to control their food intakes specifically if they are still in under medications even before discharging or already out patient.
The Doctors advice and consultations are still best to ask for proper nutrients or food intake to the patients.
If you don't trust your doctor then do your own choice. Maybe you just stay at home and don't go to the hospital if you always thinking just like that. Doubtful precious beautiful mind of yours.
And I am not a Doctor and I have been a patient just recently a couple a months ago. And I really do thanks the Hospital, Doctors the and those beautiful sexy nurses during sleepless nights even I don't have any food intake but boy who needs it if you got angels at your side.

gj,
Either, the article and my discussion isn't clear enough or there is some illiteracy at your end.
The issue here is not the doctors or nurses in the hospital, it is about the hospital's management and how the institution can actually be doing this. If you had been a patient (or you haven't been), doctors and nursing staff do not have any control and inkling idea about the food that comes out from the hospital's kitchen. Are you aware? Please get your facts in order and right.
Hope you have recovered with the help of your angels.

As I said how can you eat any kind of good food if your under medications or under the probations of the doctors. My main agenda is to be cured first so I can eat food I want to again.
Hospitals are not restaurant or hotel. Hospitals are manage by doctors and nurses they know what are the very best to cure their patience. They are not cooks and waitresses. If you want to have the best good services especially foods then go to a more sophisticated Private Hospital that you will pay a lot money in your pocket.
Usually hospital foods are from food concessionaire or catering. And not directly prepared from hospital kitchens.
On public Hospitals. Yeah! you are right... In this kind of hospitals they will give insufficient food nutrients to their patience. But what do you expect this is only a public hospital. These are for low income generated sectors. And still their main agenda is to cure their patience.
It may true or not but I think its just an isolated cases
hehehhehhe yeah! It helps a little bit because of hapiness while with them.... lol.... Thanks for them and now I mis them already because of you talking about hospital.... lol.... I recover just fine. And just mild, mild stroke due to bad cholesterol build up, cramps and fever.
By the way. Are you from U.K. or Singapore?

gj,
On the contrary, here again!
Why is it that you are harping and going along the lines that I am asking for some 5 star gourmet dinning experience in a hospital? I have repeatedly mention to you that I am only seeking a decent and nutritious meal for recovering sick patients. Is that too much to ask for?
Look, it does not matter where you are and how the hospital food are being served. It could be through some contracted caterers, local restaurants and / or from the institution's very own kitchen - at the end of the day the food has to meet the standard requirements of hygiene and nutrition, period! Can you and do you understand so far?
Now as you can see from the article, (please refer to the chart) you can see that the amount apportioned for the food is really beyond pathetic and I am sure given the in born common sense I am sure you can tell just how much they can acquire or rather cannot acquire.I am also sure that you are aware that the hospital fees are rather expensive and it is an institution that is responsible to help the sick to recover. Now, how is it that sick patients cannot be expecting and entitled to a decent meal served on their table when the inmates are having a wallowing time? Where is the logic and most of all justice?
Please do not think that this is an isolated case and if I may encourage and remind you to read the article again it isn't an isolated case. Please refer to the chart. Also, it will be interesting to mention to you here that some of them are actually nursing homes.
Again, let me conclude and remind you that it does not matter which country, where we are from or where we are, be it at a private hospital, national hospital or nursing home, as long as you have to pay for your hospitalization stay and you can eat solid food - I DO NOT EXPECT a 5 star gourmet menu but it has to be a DECENT and NUTRITIOUS meal served on the table, period!
Have a nice day!

Could it be there are less people in hospitals than prisons, as prisons are over crowded? Or that some people in hospitals arent actually fed food?
Just trying to figure out why this would be...
If those arent the cases, then it is truly appalling and I am going to lookup the conditions in the states as well, as that is where I live...and I will be back to share, once I find something!
Thanks for bringing this to my attention! =)

stacyv81,
I think if you look closely at the chart in the article, you will find just how pathetic the amount spent on the food is like. I mean at that budget where can one find a decent meal on a plate and we are talking about food for sick patients who need all the nutrients from a nutritious diet.
I am sure that you are aware that hospital fees are expensive and it is an institution that is responsible to help the sick to recover. How these people in these places go about apportioning the fees to food is really a wonder. I do not expect a 5 star dinning experience but at least it should be decent and meets the standard requirement.
So, I would advise that we had better start noticing these details before someone gets away with murder. This time it will be the innocent patients' lives here.
Take care.

^_^ Howdy skysuccess!....
Well I think because people need to be cured in hospitals and not to feed their hungry stomach.
Some patients feeds through Intravenous foods or liquids. That's how patients feeds some nutrients thru their bodies.
Some patients does not yet need to put food into their stomachs or into their digestion systems. Like with intoxications problem or poisoned victim. Diabetes. Liver failures and others that will greatly effect other system if they eat food normally.
^_^ Thanks and Enjoy!.... myLot!....

gj,
Are you for real?
Whatever you have mentioned may be valid however, I cannot totally go along with your prerogatives here. Are you aware that after the drips and intravenous feedings, the patients will be nursed back to normal foods for a period before they are being discharged? Now, how would it be like for them to be taking "junk" when it should be a well balance and measured diet? Diabetics, cancer and all other patients are humans and they will need food and diets appropriate to their condition and when these things are being undermined it will be no different from an act of poisoning them.
Look, what kind of food do you think the patients will be getting at "One hospital spent just £1"? We are not asking for exotic and luxurious foods but even a decent meal would have cost more than that right? UK is known for its comprehensive and sound health welfare and insurance infrastructures, one of the world's finest and I just find it relatively unacceptable for these health institutions to mismanage the finances here. It is simply inhumane.
Cheers.

No wonder the food in the hospitals are so pathetic and horrible.
I must agree with you, that corruption is certainly an issue that cannot be overlooked here. Corruption is indeed worldwide and I am not surprised that this is happening in the UK. I hope the authorities will be able to get to the bottom of it and have the culprits brought to justice.
It is certainly not fair for the inmates to be fed well whilst the sick patients be left to starve this way. It is cruel.

bunnybon7,
I felt that this news could not have come at a better time where it could prevent some mismanagement and misappropriation from the relevant administrations in health administrations worldwide.
Hopefully, there will be tighter controls through this revelation and awareness - which at the end will be a life saver indeed.
Cheers.
