How often is normal to change a job in your view?

In my view, it's not very good to work in a same company for too long, it might be ok to change a job once in some years. Since once could learn a lot of things in different companies and could know more people, though it might be also possible that one could learn a lot in the same company by doing different parts in a few departments. I changed a job recently after I had been working in EE for some 3.5 years, I think I do like the new job not only because I know quite some new friends but also because the new tasks are quite challenging. So what about you? How often is normal for you to change a job?

Hello andyliuzn, When I just started, I like job hunting. I can stay one year (the longest) with one company. But, I have been working for the present company for more than 10 years. It is quite a good job and good salary though sometimes, I find the job is quite monotonous to me. Since I have a small kid, this is the best thing to do as my present company really put me into a comfort zone.

Hi Gr8life, Thanks for sharing your idea with me. That's amazing to have been working in a company for more than 10 years. I think it's really great to stay in a company as long as possible if he/she loves what he/she does in the company.

I am in the recruitment business and we often find it reasonable for people to change a job around 3-4 years, because it shows that he or she has a stable career history. We don't like people who change jobs year after year because it shows that they have no commitment towards the job or the company!

I couldn't agree with you that it's not good for one guy to change a job year after year, I think it's ok for me to change a job every 5 years, but if I love a job in a company, I could stay longer.

I think changing jobs after a year is okay. But if you can't hold down a job then that's not good either. I believe that a person has to have less than 10 steady jobs in his or her lifetime. If you do more than that then it might show that you have a problem in committing.

Personally,I think changing jobs about 5 or 6 times before one retires is accpectable. Its not good to change jobs too often.I dont appreciate to be a life_long employee.I left my previous school in which I worked for three years for my current one.Im sure I'll leave my current school some day,but havent figured out where to go.lol I guess I'll work drop my current job at least in another three years.

I think its ok for a person to stay at one job for their entire career if they want to and are lucky enough to be able to do so. My aunt has been at the same job her whole career. She loves it. She started out as the sectary and worked her way up to office manager. They can't run the office without her. The Doctor she works for about 4 years ago opened up another office and she had to go train everybody. If the job your at now can offer you room to move up the ladder and you like the atmosphere and they people you work with then I think you should stick with the company, but if your not comfortable and there is no room for you to grow in position and in pay then look for another place to work. This is the first real job I have had. I could only find temp work when I graudated from college 4 years ago. I've been at my job now for 2 years. But there is no room for me to grow and Im starting to get uncomfortable with some of the things one of my bosses does in relation to how he treats the clients. I for two very small law offices. Im the only employee they have and I do a bit of everything. That is not really what i want to be doing. I want to simply be a paralegal, not the sectary, office manager, etc.. I do all those jobs and its very stressfull. Right now Im thinking of looking for a new job, but I might wait until I reach 3 years just to give me more exiprence.

You are right but job hopping has more disadvantages then advantages. You see when you keep on moving around you will be branded as not reliable and employers are scared to take you in when they know you are a loser and a hopper. It is better to stay put in one place and gained your seniority and respect from the employer. There is a saying that says 'rolling stone gather no moss'

There has been a sea change in this situation. Earlier our parents used to work in government job. They used to join and retire from same one. But the idea of Private company has changed the scenario. Now people change as they need to get a boost in career. in this situation in a company max 3.5 yr is ok.

It depends what sort of work you do. A person who has good qualifications to do a certain job will stick with it for the rest of its life. It helps you become an expert in what you do... which will give you the opportunity to earn more because experts are sought after in any job. Who you work for is your choice. You will usually go with who offers you the best salary. What's important is that you stick with what you know best. Learning a thousand different things does not make you an expert in anything. It only makes you a good handyman.

I have changed 4 Jobs until now . And last one I have stayed almost 4 years .It's so long time I think . But this job is not the one I satisfied . I nearly can't learn much more things from this job and it's really boring . In addition , the salary is not so high . I do hope change the current job . but I often haven't much courage to do that .. because the recession .. from this point , It's abnormal for me . Stay in one company too long that you'll lose your confidence ... So , I hope I can be more active and positive ... two years is ok if we 're young :)

I think that a person should only stay in the same position if there is room for advancement. It really depends on the individual since some people hate changing jobs and they feel comfortable in the same position for the rest of their lives.

PROMOTION JOB It is a must for an employee to make move from current job to a new job regardless of employer. Either with the same employer of different employer. The new environment absolutely will inspire one employee to outdo the work performance with the new tasks. While to give proof in high work/management skills. EXCITING AND REWARDING These two (2) factors are the main supportive points for an employer for the decision making. Must ensure that the new working environment, nature surrounding, teamwork, executive friendliness are sounds exciting. It can be check out through self-investigation through any current staffs or related third party. I mean, discerning oneself about the new work place reputation. At least, can figure out it as a whole. Rewarding is always the issue. No point if got promotion but the new income does not rewards commensurately with the be shouldered obligations and as well as the expenses involved in the new work place. What I mean is, if new monthly salary is only up for $200 from the previous income, but the expenses such as for transport also increase similarly to the increment. NEW PLACE NEW ATTITUDE Maybe just want to change new attitude in a way of looking new life. It is a good reason to take account in decision making, as the current work place does not allow an employer to develop new idea or implement new system. Exploring new thing is one of the new challenge to make an employer be more productive and at the same time able to beef up ROI(Return On Investment) to new employer.

I think that change is good but I'm not sure how long you should remain in one particular job. If you love your job for example, why would you want to leave? On the other hand, perhaps it's good to remain in a job for two to three years if you have a huge goal that you want to achieve. There may be an ultimate job that you are aiming for and you may have to do different jobs in order to reach that goal, this definitely makes sense. Well, I guess everyone has their own personal choice in relation to this. Andrew

I tend to change jobs every 5 years or so in order to develop a stable track record and also to walk away with great refferals and lotsa friends. The other benefit was that apart from the excitement of starting a new job also my salary normally doubles too.

Yes, I do have change my job two times. At the first, I worked as a furniture designer for export furniture. I take it about one year. Since I think my senior is having no good in movement. Then I take to the telecommunication construction provider. I stayed there for more than 5 years. Then at the end of 2008, I take my chance to grow my own business. Still the same major, in telecommunication construction. Till now, my company is still growing. Not big yet, but we are booked a quite a lot of amount of money. 070707
