Cannot understand such strong arm tactics being acceptable!

What do you think of the idea (and bill!) to take away the secret ballot when it comes to voting yea or nay to having a union in your work place? Won't this make it hard for an honest vote? Making it easy for the majority to put pressure on and browbeat the others? I see no point to this, except as a tool for intimidation. Is it true in Europe every small business has to have the union? There's a move on in my state, by the governor, to make it law home care workers must be unionized. Some challenges to it are saying what about the little old folks who receive the care? If the worker finds some of the work undesirable, they can say take it up with my union? And by the way (like in education) you can't fire me! - What do you think of this bill?

I think they should have a bill that puts an end to Unions. They are the main reason so many companies were forced to leave America for cheaper labor. They served their purpose, we don't need them anymore. They are only contributing to bankrupt our country. They have become become the greedy, corrupt bullies they were developed to stop.

I don't like the card check idea because it will be easy for persons to be intimidated or shamed into signing it. The way I understand that process, you only need a percentage of the workforce at that particular business location and it's a done deal. At the same time. It will take away the ability of employers to intimidate, buy out, threaten and use all the laws Bush put in place to keep the unions out. So it will hurt everyone. I think tho that MOST folks have a misconception of a union. (being constantly brainwashed by the media and management). Most unions are not in a business just for wages and driving them out of business. That would be a little foolish. Most unions are there because a business has no respect for a workers health and safety. No respect for workers in general with verbal abuse, pay abuse, promotion abuse, forcing a worker to work in conditions that will hurt them physically or breathing stuff that cause long term health problems. I've never been in a union and retired now. But, I have worked at places that needed one. This is a question that has no easy answer but, I don't think the card check is the answer. AND I will say that I believe some unions have gone crooked and are too restrictive on the business. A lot of people think all businesses will become unionized. I don't believe this will be the case. By the way. My son works for General Motors and his wages are 26.00 dollars an hour. Except for skilled trades workers. He is at the top of the pay scale. Nissan workers make 28.00 dollars an hour and Toyota workers make 24.00 to 31.00 dollars an hour. When I was a welder at a small factory. I made 32.50 dollars an hour. The question on wages is how much is a person really worth at a certain business and a certain occupation? I will stop cause I know I'm off subject but this question has so many facets. Back to the card check. I think card checks is a bad idea because as a rule. American workers are weak willed and can't say no if they don't follow the majority or are threatened by fellow workers. I say this through 40 years of working experience and I think I've seen a lot.

Don't worry. Your not arguing. Your right to say freedom is what it's all about. I was trying to show that just because a business is unionized. They are not necessarily being overpaid with the only ambition to get high wages and drive the business under like so many people think. I am not trying to defend a particular union. But, I've seen where in certain circumstances a union wouldn't be a bad thing. When wages are negotiated and settled. Everyone covered under the contract has to stay at those wages for the period of the contract. Which can be good if all you have are a lot (10 to several hundred)workers doing the same basic type jobs without the education or ability to rise in the company. Even so. you still have the ability to get the correct education, quit the union and get a better position.

"My son works for General Motors and his wages are 26.00 dollars an hour. Except for skilled trades workers. He is at the top of the pay scale." Not trying to get into an argument, but my son is 28 years old and makes the same wages. He didn't get there through a union, though, he gets paid that much because he makes himself valuable to his employer. He is not at the top of the pay scale... they have the freedom to pay him as much as they like. Freedom is the key word in all of this.

This is one of the stupidest bills they've managed to write so far. It's going to hurt all businesses, large and small, and it's going to hurt the consumer. Can you imagine having to pay a cashier $25 an hour because she belongs to a union? How many businesses will close their doors because they can't afford it? And how many more will raise their prices to try to stay in business? That hits our bottom line - yours and mine.

So if you don't want to go union then you and your family get beat up. I believe it would be against the constitution. My grandson has friends that live in New York and it is union. You can't get a job unless you belong to union. you can't start a business that is covered by unions like plumbing. Look at the auto makers and the unions. They have such high wages that the average joe really can't afford a new car if he wanted one unless he get into hock up to his eye balls. In my opinion the unions did some good years ago but they need to be rained in. I believe this bill will really hurt the country worse than we are already hurting.

I think so too. Unions these days seem more like racketeers. This was a really good country for folks, then everyone decided they had to fix it!

I think they should still be able to have a secert vote but then the Union motto is a fair days work for a fair days pay!. The thing is to look at whole package of what a Union would do for you .

I had no idea that they got paisd as much as they dio . But still they have to have all of techknowledge now to make cars! All the chips in there cost alot of money . But to me they could cut their pay YTo like $40 an hour with a good package. When you are in a Union you have to be the top of your field to get top wages!.

There is no good reason to pass this bill. It shouldn't be anyones right or business to see how you have voted. Doesn't it seem to say, "We have the right to bully you into voting for a union,"? Is that the message the Obama administration is sending? Does he think businesses will put up with it? It's a very bad bill that will do more harm than good.

I heard about this. We are arriving at a new world order. Our country is getting closer to socialism...the lack of privacy is overwhelming. Obama will make everything worse. No, I don't like it.

I don't agree with that bill. Secret ballots are the foundation of this country! Nobody should have to join a union if they don't want to. Unions nowadays, as far as I can see, serve only to drive up wages and benefits and drive businesses out of business because of the overhead. Unions were sorely needed a century ago. Today we have social awareness and special interest groups to protect our rights, as well as labor laws. I really don't think we need unions--these days they exist just to extort businesses and make the union officials rich. If I'm wrong, educate me.

This is a stupid idea. The railroad I used to work for recently had one he11 of a battle over joining U.S. Sugar's union or not and my former boss got very ugly with anyone who was showing an interest in voting them in. The crews were split and no one really knew how the vote would go until it was over. Had the voting not been by secret ballot they would have been voted out because management decides how many hours you get each week, what shifts you get and basically if you earn a good living or not...and they can get away with messing with your schedule, union or not.

I think it's a horrible bill. I can just see the unions using strong arm tactics to assure the vote always goes their way.

It's preposterous and shouldn't even be considered. Unions are what ruined the car companies. They have served their purpose and have ended up being the very bullies they were started for to defend the people from in the first place.
