When I was younger and learning how to cook I was so excited I was going to make the best spaghetti for my honey! I had everything ready and I had bought to small cans of spaghetti sauce (well tomato sauce) for my spaghetti, I had the noodles done, the canned tomatoes, in the hamburger browned, and I reached into the cabinet and poured in one of the cans of tomato sauce...and reached in for the other I saw "tomato" on it and threw it in... Then I tasted it....I thought...what? This isnt right, so I looked at the can to my right...TOMATO SOUP.....EW!!! What was your biggest oops! moment in the kitchen?

Nearly setting it on fire. I was cooking a steak recipe, and you'd cooked the steak in a pan. The recipe then said to heat a ladle full of brandy, then ignite it. No problem so far, the brandy is burning gently in the ladle. Then, the recipe says pour the flaming brandy into the hot frying pan with the steak in it. What it didn't say was be careful of the metre high flame this produces.

Most of my kitchen oops! moments involve a microwave oven. The first time I tried making baked potato in the microwave it exploded all over. Then I learned about pricking potatoes with a fork first. Someone told me you could make hard boiled eggs in the microwave... I remembered the incident with the potato so I when I tried to cook an egg in the shell I covered it with a mug thinking if it exploded the mug would contain the mess. I even poked a small hole in one end of the shell..... BLAM!.... egg spattered all over the inside of the microwave with shattered glass mug. I tried melting sugar in the micro for making candy. Thinking it would be better then the old stove top.... Melted the plastic bowl I was using... tried it again in a glass bowel .. melted the very center of that too! Lastly don't put Melmac or Melamine dishes (melmac/ melamine is a type of plastic or bakalite from the 40's & 50's) in the micro they explode. If it was made before microwaves were invented it probably shouldn't be used in one.

When I was a newly wed and my first day in my new home my hubby bought a heater for cooking as in those days getting gas cylinders for gas stoves involved a lot of paper work. I had never seen a cooking heater in my life and he asked his orderly too to wait and have a cup of tea with us. When I switched the heater on the heat was very low and I kept the water for boiling. I waited almost ten minutes and stil the water didn't heat up so I added sugar meanwhile my enthusiastic hubby was coming peering over the heater what is happening. Ia dded sugar and then waited another ten minutes but noithing happened so I added the milk too as I had boiled it in the evening and it was still hot. Still nothing happened tea never came to a boil. So I finally added the tea leaves and let it simmer. After finally forty five minutes I tok it off the stove and poured the teas in the ups still slightly warmed not hot and served. I was very tense and thought if this was the rate at which a cup of teas will be made then what about the food. SO next day I got up early at five to prepare for his breakfast and when I swtched on the heater it instantly lit up with the full blast and then we realised that previous evening the voltage was so low that nothing was getting heated up on the heater. What a fiasco my first cup of tea was in my new home.

My fisrt ooppss in the kitchen was the first time I ever made dinner. I was probably 10 or 12 and it was for a girl scout badge. I made grilled cheese and burnt them pretty badly. My father was a doll and ate all of his saying how great they were. I'll never forget that! The worst thing I did though was once I was making brownies for my sons school. I wanted to make a double batch so that there would be plenty for everyone. I doubled everything except the eggs. UGH!!! They were horrible! I threw them in the trash :-(

Hi stacyv! haha..That is a big funny "oops" for you! I have a fair share of oops or bloopers in the kitchen especially when I was newly wed. Never knew how to really cook then but I am glad to say that I have learned so much since then. My biggest oops that I remember is when I am cooking this special dish for my husband and that I needed to add sugar for this native dish. However, I ran out of brown sugar so I used white sugar instead. Now, instead of putting half cup sugar in the mixture, I mistakenly got the container for the salt..so, I put a half cup of salt into the mixture! Yuck! The taste was so awful! haha.. Take care and have a beautiful day! lovelots..faith

salt instead of sugar...did your husband eat it anyway or did you catch it before serving it to him?

haha..That is my biggest ooops secret. He never knew what happened until now. A few minutes i put the salt, I know I made a big blunder. I tried salvaging it by pouring out all the sauce on the kitchen sink (I panic) and start all over again. I was able to fix it but it ended up tasting a little different. haha.. lovelots..faith

When I was 11 years old, I was making a cake from a prepackaged cake mix. The directions called for 2-3 egg whites. I asked my Mom "what is the white of the egg?" After several explantions, she finally said..."Just put the whole egg in!" Well, that is exactly what I did....shell and all!!

My biggest oops happened on Thanksgiving in a friend's kitchen. We were in the process of moving from one state to another. My husband, children and household goods were on their way to our new home, but I had to stay behing for a few days to take care of some legal paperwork on our old home. I had a friend who was convinced that I shouldn't spend Thanksgiving alone, so she insisted that I join her and her family. She wasn't much of a cook, and it was the first time she was having her entire family over for the holiday. I really would have prefered to decline, but her invitation was sweet, and she added that she would feel better knowing that I would be there to help her out if any little misshaps should occur, so I relented. Now, in order for you to get the full picture, you have to know that at that time I had very long hair, (past my bottom), which I used to tie back when I worked in my own kitchen. On this day though, I was dressed up and left my hair down, as I figured I wouldn't be in the kitchen much. Bad decision! All of a sudden, I heard my friend call HELP, and at the top of her lungs too! I jumped up and raced into the kitchen to find her standing, wide-eyed, over a huge brown ball of something in an iron skillet. It seems that the huge brown ball was supposed to be gravy. Well, I got that mess smoothed out only to find that she had forgotten to mash the potatoes. She was frantic at this point, as all of her guests were seated and hungry, so I said where's the mixer-- I'll do the mashing while you start carrying the rest of the food to the table. There I stood, over a huge pot of steaming potatoes, with a mixer I had never used before. As I worked, my unsecured hair fell forward into the pot and before I knew it, into the mixer. Now I'm yelling for help! My hair was caught in the beaters, winding closer and closer to my head. Potatoes are flying everywhere and I can't find the off switch! Finally, I found some kind of button to push, and it turned out to be the beater release. By this time, those beaters were tight the right side of my head. Now people, if you ever want to be embarassed, just walk through a crowd of people you don't know, covered in mashed potatoes, with two lovely beaters dangling over one ear like some horrible medical appliance---- I was in the bathroom for an hour disentangling those things, and went straight home, giving thanks that I was moving far away-------- smiles to all, ink

About ten years ago my son and I were living apart from his father and we were in the middle of a divorce and it was Thanksgiving Day and I wanted to make it special for my son as it was just him and I for the meal. I fixed a big dinner and had everything perfect and was in a hurry to get the turkey out of the oven and get it sliced. I had put my turkey in a cake pan and pulled it out quickly and as I did the turkey went flying into the air and I put the cake pan up in the air and caught it. I turned around and looked at my son and his eyes were as big as quarters and he said "WOW" Not to look like a dork I turned around back to him and said " There are so many things in life I want to teach you and that was an example I wanted you to learn. Don't ever pull a turkey out of the oven like that." :)

This has been a few years ago. We lived in our old house and as with many there are cabinets above the stove. I kept all my seasonings in the cabinets in there, and as I was cooking fried chicken and I needed to grab some spices. My husband had just left to go pick up our son from his mothers and when he come home, I was in tears... (I am busting up laughing now). Anyways, when I reached up to get in the cabinet the lower part of my shirt somehow got on the burner and caught on fire, so I was on fire, as well as the chicken was burning. Needless to say, I got to eat out that night!

One time making spaghetti, it didn't seem saucey enough (I put the sauce in with the noodles prior to serving) so I added tomatoe paste. Unfortunately the pre-existing sauce was unable to lend flavor to the newly added paste. Yuck! I had never used it before so I didn't know how bland it tasted without spices. It ended up ruining the whole thing.... while I did anyway, since I tried to correct my mistake by overly adding garlic salt. I just ended up throwing it out and keeping in the Italin theme, ordered Pizza. How can something soo simple end up being so complicated?

The best thing for that is to add canned tomatoes, whole or diced... It is true though that things that start out so simple, can end up so complicated!!

Hi all! I'm going to tattle on my grandpa because I loved him so much, and bless him, he tried so hard...... When I was around 8 or 10 years old (that was....a few years ago..) my parents sent me to stay with my fathers parents for a week. These were very traditinal people. Grandma cooked and cleaned etc, etc. Grandpa was the breadwinner of the family. Somehow he ended up at home with me alone for lunch. I really don't know if he ever cooked anything before, but I told him I wanted pizza. I had never paid attention to how Mom put the thing in the oven. I only cared about when it came out. So Grandpa winged it. He did set the timer for the right time - no fire alarm went off. When we opened the oven door and I looked at our pizza, all I could think of was "That sure didn't look like any of Mom's pizzas." Grandpa had put tinfoil on top of the cheese and then put the pizza in the oven tinfoil side down on the oven rack. After flipping it onto a cuttingboard, when we pulled the foil off, all the cheese and toppings went with the foil. Then Grandpa got the strangest look on his face. I knew he was trying his best and told him we could just scrape some back on to eat. He promised me ice cream if we didn't tell Grandma. I don't recall him being in the kitchen hardley at all after that :-) Carrie

My biggest oops in the kitchen so far, has been something really stupid. All I was trying to do is heat up a brownie in the microwave to soften it up because I overbaked them. Well I put the brownie in the microwave and set it for what I thought was a few seconds, well I thought wrong and set it for a few minutes. I then got distracted by something and left the kitchen. A friend of mine who was over smelled something weird, so we went in the kitchen. The microwave was pouring out green smoke. It smelled horrible and the smoke was GREEN! Have no idea why the smoke would come out green, haha. Well anyways their wasnt any damage to anything except the microwave smelled funny for a bit. It was an interesting experience to say the least, lol.
