I have several friends that can not agree. Some of my friends say it is better to leave your computer running. And other friends say it is better to shut it down when you are not using it which is better for the computer?

Well if you are not using you pc ..You can always shutdown your pc to save come electricity. There is also no harm to on you pc 24h/7 a day..I doing this right now. So long your pc is under warranty and can be repaired..else the pc could always failed even you don't touch at all.

Hi christiancowboyholm If you leave your computer just for 15 to 25 minutes, then there is no need to switch off your pc.But whenever you are going to out site for 2 to 3hours, I think you need to shut down your pc.It is not only for pc health and also for power consumption.

If you shut off the computer you would certainly save on electricity because the monitor does consume a lot of power. New computers have an auto-sleep mode and so do some monitors so it is quite safe to keep them on in this case. Cheers!!

well you got some program running like a p2p download and you don't have the patience to sit and watch it download then the best option is to schedule a automatic shutdown(many clients provide that option, after the downloads are finished the pc automatically shuts down). If you don't prefer that then i prefer leaving your monitor off but the cpu running.I is way better then both of them eating power.Anyway they too need the rest they deserve.Shut them down go have a coffee sleep on the couch, watch a movie and come back.!!!!!!!!!

"Technically" it does not matter if you leave it on while you are not using it, computers tend to go into what we call hibernation to use less power. It is good however to restart your computer every once in a while because sometimes important updates are made to your computer, or drivers that you were not made aware of, and restarting the computer will allow the updates to take affect. I myself have not shut off/restarted my computer in about 5 months as I run a server and have not found it to slow down at all.

I've never heard a single clear cut answer. I tend to leave mine on during the day, then shut it off at night. I'm on and off it so much that I figure it's easier to just let it run. If I go out or something, I generally shut it down. And I'm on a laptop, if that makes any sort of difference.
