Can go without grain products in the am but I need that carb fix at night

The trouble is that inf the late afternoon and the evening, my husband is always asking for two slices of bread and peanut butter, or a cheese sandwich. Now this is after we have supper and I am always trying to keep my portion of bread/rice/potatoes to three to four portions a day. Now I decided that because he wants bread with everything, that I can skip at breakfast, but it gets annoying because during the evening I do want some bread and that means I eat more then I should. The other trouble is that the multi grain bread is a bit expensive, and I do get hungry around seven. So what do you eat in the evenings to fill you up in those few hours before you go to bed?

ACTUALLY, the dietician at the hospital scolded the roomie because she wasn't getting enough carbs, especially early in the day to fuel her body. When the body doesn't get enough carbs to burn during the day, it starts attacking other parts of the body - and not fat either. so, you might want to eat those carbs for breakfast and avoid them late in the day

Trouble is with me, if I eat carbs in the morning, I still have that craving at night. Now I am getting a craving for waffles.

I do have oats, but I am thinking of cutting down on my carbs anyway. I have to find something that is just as filling.

You might try to have about 12 almonds to tide you over until morning. They are a healthy fat and only 89 calories. they will make you feel full but eat them slowly Here's a recipes for making them tasty. If you don't care for this recipe there are others on the net too. Spicy Almonds Makes 2 cups Serving size: 12 almonds Calories per serving: 89 Ingredients 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 cups dry-roasted, unsalted almonds 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce 1 tablespoon brown sugar 2 teaspoons chili powder 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper Directions 1. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet until hot but not smoking, then add the almonds and stir to combine. 2. Add the Worcestershire sauce, sugar, chili powder, and salt and stir until the almonds are evenly coated. 3. Remove from heat and spread the almonds in an even layer on a baking sheet. 4. Sprinkle them evenly with cayenne pepper and allow to cool.

You could even leave the sugar out if you wanted too. Thanks for the BR

That sounds like something I would love. I do buy a lot of almonds. I will have to substitute stevia for the brown sugar because I am slightly diabetic though Or go without. Am losing my sweet tooth.

Well, When dieting I will eat fruit or a 8 oz cup of Yogurt if I have it, If not dieting I will eat whatever is on hand at the time. Which could be cereal,sandwiches,toast,leftovers..etc..

I eat yogurt at night, but I will eat the fruit during the daytime. I am trying to substitute soy flour for the regular flour, but so far have not found any recipes so I guess I will have to invent some. That would cut out some of the carbs and still make it like I am eating something.

We have supper at five, and do not go to bed until midnight so there is a lot of time between that.

If I'm really hungry in the evening I used to eat carbs because that's what I craved. A small bowl of cereal tasted good and filled me up but I would go to bed hungry. Now I make myself a small omelet of Egg Beaters-only I buy the generic because they're so much cheaper-with a little ham in it, maybe some asparagus if it's on sale, and some onions. That protein fills me up and keeps me good till morning!

i like asparagus (fresh with no cheese) but you have to use them the same day or the next day. I do have some yogurt but I think I have to go someplace else rather then at home and get away from all that temptation.

I usually have a bowl of cereal, or if I have it some ice cream. I love bread too and try not to eat too much of it.

Well, from a Diabetic stand point I vary in what I will eat, etc. as a lot of times, it will depend on what my Sugar levels are doing, and what I am in the mood for eating as well. But for me, I have found a lot of times I now Crave Bread and Peanut Butter when my Blood Sugars are running lower. It is the Protein from the Peanut Butter I am sure that causes this the most, but it also is Good for helping with getting my Glucose levels up as well. So for me, I have to plan a little around what I am planning on having for the day, and I know that if I am having something like Rice, or a lot of Carbs for dinner unless my BG level goes too low, I will try and eat things a little lower than this the rest of the day for sure.

Me too I get these cravings for carbs in the evening. I also have to restrict my carbs and get tired of oatmeal in the morning. I have toasted the oats spread out on a cookie sheet with a little canola oil. I keep them in a jar in the fridg and sprinkle some on yoghurt. Also now I go to the bulk food store and instead of just bying oat flakes I buy rye flakes and spelt flakes as well. To snack in the evening I like celery sticks when I can afford to buy it (The prices have been outragious lately) I spread a little low fat cream cheese on them or peanut butter. I also like to chomp on English cucumber or apple slices sprinkled with some sunflower seeds which I also buy at the bulk food store. Sometimes I make a big pot of Rooibos tea and sip it while watching TV but it is not as satisfactory as eating something. When your husband wants to eat something make up his snack plate and then make up yours with different things so you don't feel deprived.

well suspenseful, eating habits differ a lot from country to country and even region to region. In India we have wheat flour chapatis, both in the morning and evening, with some vegetable curries and also some rice to add with it. We eat full tummy both in the morning and evening, early morning breakfasts are usually light and sometimes i skip it coz of lack of time.

Personally, I have the same cravings, and I try my hardest not to give in. I try some popcorn, or olives. But you can't help but cave in sometimes, especially the times when you are thinking is this even worth it? So all I can say is try to do your best, it's all anyone can ask anyways.

Have you thought about buying the bread that has less calories and more fiber? Where I am at it is about the same price. Even if it is slightly more expensive it is more filling and healthy. You might also try pushing dinner back. We eat dinner around 6 or 7 and then I will have a glass of milk before bed. Or you could save a desert of fruit or sugar free pudding for your snack.

In the morning we wake up with more resolve to stick to a calorie-specific diet. We are successful until late afternoon, managing on fruit and coffee at times! Towards evening, the blood sugar drops and the mind craves for carbohydrate. If this happens at 4pm, then you are assured that you are going to be snacking on the wrong foods until midnight! LOL. I have been through these see-saws and found that I need to pile up my plate with complex carbohydrates during the day - best time is breakfast, next best is lunchtime (definitely before 2pm). Once that is out of the way, your body can cope better with less carbohydrates (read: bread) in the latter half of the day. If I were you, I'd opt for a whey protein drink for that time of the evening when your craving kicks in. Most of these drinks are low on carb and high on protein, enough to keep your hunger pangs at bay. Give it a shot. You'd be thanking me :))
