Why do you lie?

When I was a kid, my parents always tell me this, "Do not lie". Up until now they keep saying that. But sometimes, there are things that I need to hide from them (things that they would be mad like buying things like my collections and all) that is why I lie. But I never get caught when I lied about something to them. So I ask you, why do you lie? Is it to hide something that you are afraid that people won't accept you or anything? what reasons? I want to know why people lie, because for me, hiding something for who you are is not that bad. I mean truth hurts. Do you think lying can solve you problems?
