Christianity in society - is it right or wrong?

When I got up this morning I came downstairs to find a copy of the bible in our living which our seven year old daughter had been looking at. I am not religious and I do not believe in God but I do have an active interest in religion and I decided to just open it up at a completely random page and have a look. I was quite surprised at what I found! Now, the UK justice and government rely heavily upon Christianity. However, the page I opened up to stated that God does not permit women to teach. Nor does he permit a woman to have authority over a man. However, all around our country there are women in schools teaching to children, both male and female. Not only that, but they are teaching the children Christianity!! Isn't that a pure contradiction of the bible and belief in God itself? They are not permitted to teach according to Christianity yet Christianity is the very thing that they ARE teaching! Not only that, but when I went to court I was made to swear on the bible, yet the magistrate was a woman who, according to the bible, is not permitted to have authority over me, yet she was going to send me to prison for six weeks for failing to pay my court fines! Seeing as though I swore on the bible, wouldn't I be able to use this excerpt to present the fact to the courts that the magistrate is not allowed to have authority over me? (I swore on the bible after all!) Further to that, there are female bosses running companies all around the country who have authority over plenty of other men, women teaching courses, women teaching in schools, women in positions of authority, etc, and they all rely heavily upon the bible and Christianity yet are not permitted to do so by their own beliefs! Is this ironic or what? How can they justify it?

I am right with you. The Bible is filled with contradictions, and Christians will go about it as if nothing is wrong and generally excuse it as Paul being on some rant or it being in the "old testament" so now it is unimportant. The real story here is that Christians are lazy, and women Christians just keep taking hits from society and the "real world's" women who have power. It seems like everyone wants to be a Christian as long as they can bend the rules a little bit. The laziness and ignorance of the modern day Christian congregation is one reason I am not a believer (...anymore)...among other things.

It was nothing to do with the old testament, I actually read this in a copy of the new testament. It basically just says (almost to the exact words) God does not permit women to teach, nor does he permit them to have authority over a man.

Hi android, I agree with what you say here, but in Canada we do not have to swear on the Bible, unless one wishes to do so, but can rather "affirm" that they will speak the truth. The Bible was written in a day when women were considered to be a man's property and little more. That is why Jesus choice 12 men as his apostles, after all who would listen to a woman back then? The Bible is not meant to be taken literally, however there is much that is good in it. I don't believe in indoctrinating young children but think that all adults have a right to choose for themselves and their choice should be respected. I still feel that British justice upon which many other countries, including Canada, have patterned their own, is the best in the world, although it is still far from perfect. I admit if taken literally it makes no sense, women teachers, women clergy, women lawyers, woman judges - the Bible agrees with none of it. Blessings.

OMG!!!! If you dont believe in god then you are going to hell praise the lord god halleuiah! For real you need to go to church and read the bible. Like if you dont believe in god what do you believe in? Buddah??? LOL A fat statue? What's that thing gonna do for you? Raid your fridge? It's belly looks like a beach ball. I dont know about the women thing but in the bible it probably means that the man in the household should have authority over his wife, as in protecting her, not the woman protecting him... If you dont believe in god how would you know anyway. I might be running my mouth but at least im doing what the bible says by spreading the word of god. God bless us all....Please So many people will see though when the end is here, they wont believe thier eyes, it will be so shocking. LOL

Everything I've seen you post on this forum is stupid. I am not going to lie. You're the first person who has genuinely bothered me. Your views are ridiculous and "LOL." They are also pointless because you know nothing about other religions, apparently. How can you come in here and claim you have to preach this god to us (via internet, of course) and then tell us you don't know what that verse means. How would we know if we don't know god? You claim you do and you don't even know!

I am a Buddhist and I find this offensive. Before you find that you need to vomit your intolerance learn something about other religions. No one really want's you to spread the word of your god. We do not all share your beliefs and superstitions.

I don't believe in any religion personally, I'm atheist. You can't say that someone will go to hell if they don't believe in God. In their beliefs there is no God therefore there is no hell, so no I am not going to hell at all.

There is nothing wrong to believe in God.In fact, it is quiet interesting to discuss about what is wrong and what is right.I think we should believe in God the father. We must ask our selves why we are here or what our purposed that had been born in this world.Well, I don't believed in God before but when I start to learn and my teacher is a very excellent to discuss about the bible, the words of God. Mr. Tilos (my teacher) he emphasize more on how God love us the must despite our dishonesty to him, and we are always unique in the eyes of God.He say's something about forgiveness. I just thought maybe he is right.Even though I know it is very hard to do so, but still I tried. And he is right, it feels much easier and relieved in a way. Because if I did not done it. It is like that he controls me, because whenever or wherever I saw him. I got mad at him, it feels like my life is ruin.Well, thank God it was 11 years ago but now my life is simple as I wish of and peaceful because I did forgive someone that I did loved and hated at the same time.Well, that is life. And that experience did made me stronger.

You're right, there is nothing at all wrong with believing in God. However, what do you think of the above excerpt from the new testament that states God doesn't permit women to teach or have authority over a man?

This could have been a very interesting discussion, but I've seen very little about the topic itself. I haven't rally seen anoyone post a comment if Christianity belongs in society. I think that are certain principles with Christianity offers that are very useful in society. To say that society should be governed by "Christianity" is kind of hard to back up. Withing Cristianity, there ar so many denominations that CLEARLY contridict one another that it's nearly impossible to say that Christianity as a whole can someehow govern society. So, I will say no, as a whole, it has no place in governing society. (Just for background, I was born and raised an independent fundamental bapttist. Today I feel that I am more spiritual than religous)
