hello everybody here at Mylot. the other day when that my eight year old son arrived home from school, he was carrying a beautiful green cabbage plant that he had started growing in school. he is so proud of his cabbage plant, i have it sitting on the dining room table right now awaiting for when that it will be time to put it outside and let it grow. so tell me, have you ever planted a cabbage plant before? also, when should i put the cabbage plant outside for the year? and, how do you like your cabbage cooked? thanks for sharing and have a beautiful afternoon.

I have never grown cabbage plants but your son must be very proud! Be sure to let him do most of the work, especially the digging! I would say once you're sure you won't have another frost you can put it out.

I don't particularly like cabbage, no. I like corned beef and cabbage if someone else cooks it! And sometimes cole slaw but not often. Have fun with it!

We had some red/purple cabbage growing in the garden last year. It did good too. I love cooked cabbage, sliced upand boiled, drain it and add some butter. Fried cabbage is really good too. Sweet n sour cabbage is really yummy.

Well Tn, I cannot say that I ever triedto grow cabbage in any of my gardens, but I think it is pretty hardy plant, and it nned a lot of sun, like lettuce. Good luck to your son on his plant. I'm sure he is very proud! I tried to grow a bean plant for my daughter last year for a project, and it was a total disaster! I couldn't even get it to get roots, but then again, I have a brown thumb! Have a beautiful day yourself...

You can plant the seedlings outdoors early in the spring, a couple of weeks prior to the last frost. Cabbage doesn't like hot weather. Tends to rot in the extreme heat. If you plant the seedling(s) in wet weather, elevate the soil just a little bit prior to planting. I do love cabbage after it's been cooked with corned beef. Nobody in my family will eat it so I have never bothered to serve it with a meal.

Hi TnWoman, I live in a tropical country and the hot weather is not suitable for the cabbage plant to grow well. I have tried to plant some in the pots, but what I could find a few of small green leaves growing in the flower pot only . Most of the cabbages available in the market here are imported from foreign countries. It is really great that your son could plant such a beautiful cabbage plant. I think you would better to have an online check to find out the when is the best time to let the cabbage plant growing outside your house. We like to stirred fry the cabbage with shrimps, or to cook veggies curry with it and other vegetables like long beans, brinjauls, potatoes and etc. We also like preparing spicy and sour pickle with cabbage, pineapple, carrot and cucumber. All of them are respective yummy. Happy posting and take care.

I don't know anything about cabbage plants lol. But what a lovely thing for the school to do. Every year we get the usual tomato plants from school. But it would be so lovely for them to do something a little bit different with them for once!

This may not be an eating cabbage, it is also an annual so it will not live for very long. Put it outside when danger of heavy frost is gone, but it will not survive the summer, it won't like the heat. Give you son some seeds of other plants to plant, that way he will learn how things grow, produce flowers and then seeds and die, only to drop their seeds and grow again. Beans are pretty easy to grow and will produce something he can eat.

Hi TnWoman....yes I have planted cabbage. I have no idea when to plant it in your climate. It can easily get insects I found and had to be really looked after. I have also grown flowering Kale as its so pretty late in the year when everything else is gone! I do like cabbage to eat as well. Particularly in cabbage rolls!..Yummy!..Now that is something I have not made in a while. I also like just cooked cabbage with butter and pepper.
