I want to upgrade my computer but I need help. I have a HP pavilion, i think i have a 80GB hard drive, 256 RAM, Pentium 3 or 4? CD/RW and DVD ROM. Do you think i should upgrade or just get new? I really need to upgrade! Should I stay XP or go VISTA? Or should i completly change to Mac or Linux? Any suggestions?

I almost just said buy a new PC, but what really matters is what you need. Even a low end, $299 computer will have a 200GB hard drive and 1GB of RAM right now, so honestly, I think it would be pointless to upgrade an old machine rather than buy a new one with a warranty. Why do you want to upgrade? Do you need a bigger hard drive? More memory? Or is your computer just slow. If it's just slow, go for a new PC. otherwise, check the prices of the upgrades your considering.

Hi, 80 GB is enough to you but you can increase the RAM capacity to 1 GB if you are using P4 configuration but if you are using p3 or lower configuration it is not possible to increase you RAM capacity i think so then you can go for latest configuration with 160 GB and 1 GB ram..... If you want to use VISTA OS your RAM capacity should be greaterthan or equal to 1 GB so if you want to use VISTA you can increase your RAM capacity if you r using PIV configuration.... Thanks RK

I haven't used vista myself as yet and I'm very happy with xp so I would say, remain with xp. If you want to follow the upgrade paths though then by all means upgrade to vista. If you want to upgrade to vista though then you are going to have to upgrade your RAM. The minimum requirement for vista is 1GB and at least 4GB for vista to run effectively. You need to establish whether your motherboard inside your computer can take the upgrade of memory. The memory you have at the moment, 256RAM, this is quite low in today's environment. Your maximum upgrade might be to 512MB RAM. Here's a golden rule to follow. If the upgrade is going to cost you less than half of what it costs to buy a new computer then by all means do it otherwise, you are better off buying a new computer with vista already pre-loaded onto the system. Good luck. Andrew

What is the computer mainly used for? What do you think you need your PC for? If it is used mainly for accessing internet, editing office documents and general entertainment, I would suggest you upgrade your ram only. Your computer will start working faster. Also I would suggest you should stick with XP. It is more user friendly and much faster than vista. In case you use your computer for much more demanding tasks like editing videos or to write codes using memory hogging applications like MATLAB etc, you should consider getting a new PC. On a new PC you can install multiple operating systems and using whichever system you need to use depending on your needs.

I think it is time that you should change all the important features of your pc,ie,your processor, motherboard, ram and hard dsk.a dvd writer would also be a good option.i think you have to spend about $150 to upgrade it.xp is good enough so there is no need to spend extra bucks on more ram.a 512mb or your existing 256 mb will do fine.however as your pc is outdated i think you have to change your whatever be its capacity. If you buy a new processor and motherboard then you would have to buy a ram as well, even if if it is 256 mb coz the old one wont be compatible with the new motherboard.hard dsk is good enough. If you have nothing to store then 80 gb is fine. But if you plan on storing movies and songs it is pretty low.a 160gb or 240gb will do well.It all depends on what purpose you will use it.

To be honest it all depends on what your going to be using the computer for, if it's simple home/office work then by all means upgrade the Ram but essentially judging by the standard specifications of your computer and the processor, I would stick with XP as XP uses minimum of 256mb ram, so I would add atleast 1 gig of ram, I am guessing that the type of ram that your computer uses is SDRAM which nowadays is hard to find, and well personal experience never buy memory from ebay. Vista uses minimum 1 gigabyte of ram, and trust me, vista does not like old computer components. though saying that. Linux would run smooth as hell on your computer, and you can even get starr office which if I remember correctly is free. You can however get a free livecd of linux which has all the necessary programs to get you started, so all you need to do is pop in the cd, and the computer should automatically boot into linux, without you having to install linux over your current operating system. I've done this with all my computers that I supply to my customers, so it gives them the ability to see what linux is all about before losing any data on their current hard drive. here is the website for a free ubuntu cd or you can just download it from the website located here http://www.ubuntu.com/
