Hi elephantgirl,
I will highly suggest you to use Pilates ball while doing push ups. I started to do it few weeks ago, The reason i suggest this is, while you are doing push ups with the ball you don't spend to much effort and it doesn't hurt you a lot because ball helps you to lift you up, but at the end you make a really good exercise.
I am enjoying iy and started to see results.

The best way to put in your mind in order to attain a good looking abs is DISCIPLINE.
Discipline yourself from eating to much. Always control your diet, limit your food intake every meal, always eat healthy foods like vegetables and fruits, better avoid very fatty and oily meals because they are the major fat contributor to your body, say no to junk foods.
Do some exercises. Exercise not only helps develop your abs but is also one way of losing weight and having a perfect beautiful body. Doing proper sit-ups daily, it can help flatten your abs, jogging, cycling, getting into physical sports...etc.
But then all of these small tips would become useless if somehow you wont properly discipline yourself and dedicate your life in accomplishing your primary goal.
