My daughter is a single parent and has gotten a job at the Isle Casino in Iowa as a cook. After her 90 days the casino is going to send her to culanary arts college to become a registered chef and she will have to sign a contract with them to work for them for a time period as they are picking up her education. Will she earn enough to support herself and a special needs child? Her daughter is four now and lives with me but the daughter was born not breathing and now has ashma, had bladder reflex that required surgery to save her kidneys, has a hearing problem, goes to speech twice a week and is showing signs of some learning disabilities. Will this career earn my daughter enough to support herself and her daughter in the future? The child lives with me (Grandma) right now as my daughter is having trouble keeping her rent paid but will not come home to live with us.

I am sorry to hear about your grand-daughter hope all is well. First, I dont believe there is such thing as a registered chef. You can certainly get a culinary arts degree on both an associates and bachelor level, but does a degree make you a chef. A chef is someone who connects ingredients with flavors without the presence of food. A chef is someone who understand the principles and techniques of classical cusine. A chef understand the restaurant business and has a wide knowledge of front of the house operations as well as the cheif of the kitchen. It takes years to become a true "Chef".
But to answer your question, straight out of culinary school, if motivated enough you can easily land a manegment position (sous chef or lead cook) and bring in $40,000 a year. After years of experience you could end up in an Executive Chef position and bring in $75,000 in a medium-sized restaurant to over $120,000 in a large operationo or hotel.
