Has the power button on your computer ever gotten stuck before?

Hello All, Has this happened to you? The power (on/off) button on my computer keeps sticking. As a result it keeps turning my computer off. Grrr! How frustrating. Anyway, has this ever happened to you? Or have you heard of it happening to anyone else? Do you know how to correct the problem? Before I take the tower cover off I'm wondering if this is a simple cleaning (dust) fix, or if it's a damaged part issue. Any ideas? Thanks, I'm looking forward to reading your advice.

Yes I had that same problem too before, Its usually got stuck, though is doesn't make my Pc turn on and off. All I did was to let it bee seen by a techy guy so that i won't need to mess up my computer just by fixing it myself. The switch is located in front but it is surrounded by too many wires so I opted to let it be fixed by a professional. As a result it was a damaged switch, so they changed it with a new one and thanks God till now its working well.

I'm rather a do-it-yourself-er, so I'll appreciatively accept your personal story that a part replacement may be necessary, and be prepared to have to order the necessary part. Thank you Agmamayo.

Yea, the switch area is quite clear cut. Just open the CPU casing and you can see it quite clearly usually...

No, it has not happened to me. Not yet anyway. But, I imagine it must be frustrating! My computer started acting up on me, kept going off too. But that was because there was too much dust and cat hair in the computer. I vacuumed it out, and all is well again. Take care, good luck with your power button.

I'm not worried about hair balls, but I'm sure there's real dust built up inside the tower. Thanks Margajoe.

Your welcome. Did you vacuum the tower? Is everything back to normal? I hope so. Take care.

Hi my Lady, Not really. But yes, hardware isn't perfect and it does break down. There is something wrong with my power button (I think) because I need to press it a certain way with a certain amount of force to start up my computer properly. It may just be that I am thinking too much but it seems that my computer has a higher probability of starting up successfully when I press it the "right" way with the "right" force. For your case, I guess you can take a look inside and see if perhaps the connection got not too good due to dust or chewing gum(lol) or whatever.

Thank you oh wizardly one. That's how mine started out, by having to press a certain way with a certain amount of pressure. It would seem that there is more at work here than a displaced dustbunny. For me anyway -- it's looking like a part replacement-- bummer!

I had one that stuck in the ON position. Hah! People generally take their cars in for maintenance on a regular schedule, but for some reason they don't take their computers in ever. But I know I am at my computer many more hours every day than in the car. Go figure. My suggestion would be to have a professional take a look at it.

Aw, now that would just be giving in! Nope, not until I unmask this beast and learn the nature of this sinister plot. Oh wait! I've been watching too much Mission Impossible.

Often, the button has a long pushrod attached to the back of it, so the switch might be further away than you think. If you have it handy, spray some electrical contact cleaner on the switch. Then hit it with some silicone spray (silicone is nonconductive).

Thank you, Ima_C_Suvaya. I don't have any silicone spray, but can certainly pick some up.
