What type friend he is?

Though I am having so many friends, I am very close to one. He used to help others always in financial matter. When some one comes for money ,he will be giving without any hesitation to them how much ever he is having in his hand.He will be doing this kind of helps in front of others, mainly so that others can know about him,of course he likes that. Well if he stop with this,it will be very fine.After the money in his hand is vanished,he will approach me and lend money by giving a assurance of returning in a short period. But he never returned such money to me,but three times he has helped me also when I was not having money. But if we compare the amount he got from me,which is very very less. After some days, the other friends used to return the money to him what they have got some days back from him. But he is not at all retuning it to me, in turn. I am not able to ask him, as he has helped me earlier. Another thing, when he ask money from me, he used to do it when I am alone and he will not tell anybody about this, and also he will ask me to not to tell any one.Though I know very well he is cheating me and I am in the mood of avoiding his friendship,I am not able to do. How can I avoid him or is there any way to change him..of course I feel he will never change himself. Please suggest some advice in this regard.
