I got my kids some corn dogs the other day. My daughter just pulls the breading off, but my son loves them. I have thought about trying to make them. Have you ever tried making corn dogs before? How did they turn out?

They're easy to make homemade, but very, very messy! At least in my experience. What I do is mix up a regular cornbread batter, only a touch thicker. Your oil shouldn't exceed 350. And when you put the stick in the hotdogs, you should dust them in cornstarch so the cornbread batter has something to cling to. It might take a few dips to get the hang of it, but it's totally worth it. I'll stuff my hotdogs with pepperjack cheese and things like that before I dip and fry them. They're so much better than store-bought corndogs. The only real "tip" I could give is to pour the batter into a cup (or something deeper than the hotdog) after mixing it. Make sure that you use baking powder in the recipe. The idea is to get a relatively thin coating on the hotdog. As it cooks, it will plump up to that classic corndog shape. Trying to put as much raw coating on them to where it looks like a store-bought will end up bad! Trust me.

Corn dogs are basically hot dogs that are stuck on sticks and then dipped into thick cornbread batter and deep fried. Most kids love them and eat them with ketchup. They are a popular fair item here in the US.

I never really knew anybody that made them and when I was little, I asked my mom to buy me some that were frozen and you just heat them up. Back then, I hated them and would not eat them once I found that I didn't like them. I often think to get some and try them now that I am older but I always get distracted when I am in the store. Something tells me that if I did buy them, I would just peel the corn part off and eat the hotdog. I am just picky that way.

That is what my daughter does. She takes the outside off and my son eats it.

We have home made corn dogs all of the time. Make corn bread mix with little less liquid. Dip your hot dogs then deep fry. Yum!

I have never made nor eaten corn dogs before, except for when my mother gave me some. I really did not know what they were. When I prepared them, there was potatoes and a hot dog inside. I guess they were corn dogs. the breading was quite large, and I was surprised to see the hot dog inside. I thought it was some kind of wrap. I thought it didn't taste too bad.

I love corndogs! I haven't had one on a long time though. Yes I did try to make them when the kids were smaller. They weren't anything to write home about! I just fixed cornbread mixture and dipped them in but you have to dip the hot dog in water first o the breading will no stick to it. Thenjust deep fry them. They aren't near as good as the store bought ones are though.

I never would have thought about sicking them in water first to get the batter to stick. Thanks for the tip.

I've never tried to make them myself. But I found vegetarian corn dogs a long time ago and bought them. They tasted so good! They look like corn dogs and taste like corn dogs, but they only have 5g of fat per corn dog, which is unheard of for regular corn dogs. For the ultimate test I gave one to my dad. He will not eat anything vegetarian if he knows what it is beforehand. So I asked him if he wanted a corn dog, he said yes, he ate it, and he loved it. He never knew it was healthy! He doesn't object to healthy, he just has it in his head that vegetarian things taste bad. I tried them simply because I wanted a corn dog and was wary of the fat content of real ones. Oh to be your daughter's age when they don't have weight problems so they can eat regular corn dogs! lol
