Castrating Your Dog

March 18, 2009 3:31am CST
Hi I was hoping that someone can offer me some advice. I had my fourteen month old collie cross labrador castrated yesterday. He was a bit groggy from the anesthetic but it seemed to soon wear off. Trouble is he seems to have got more vicious and twice last night he bared his teeth at me, something he has never done before. Is this a result of the castration or because of the collar he has to wear for ten days to stop him licking the wound. (The collar itself doesn't seem to be working as he can still lick) He was a really friendly dog and I am hoping that castrating him hasn't changed that - any advice out there or experience?

Your dog may be scared and feel vulnerable due to the medication and possibly pain. When dogs get scared, sometimes they act aggressively, which would explain him baring his teeth at you. When he did that, were you reaching for him? Perhaps he felt as though he couldn't defend himself. Also, that collar might be making him cranky too! If it persists for another day, however, I would take the dog back to the vet. Maybe this is your dog's way of showing that he's in a lot of pain. Good luck! Hope it all works out for you and the dog!! :)
