I recently watched a Japanese movie called 'Departures'. I watched it with high expectations as it is the winner of 2009 Oscars, Best Foreign Film. This movie turns out to be much better than I've expected and I find myself crying almost throughout the movie. It's really touching and heartwarming. (v.v) 'Departures' revolves around a man called Daigo. He is a devoted cellist in an orchestra that has just been dissolved and he now finds himself without a job. Daigo decides to move back to his old hometown with his wife to look for work and start anew. He sees a classified ad which is entitled 'Departures'. Thinking that it is an advertisement for a travel agency, he goes for interview. However, he later discovers that the job is actually an undertaking job. His duty is to prepare deceased bodies for burial and entry into the next life. While his wife and others despise the job, Daigo takes a certain pride in his work as he feels that he's a gatekeeper between life and death, and, between the departed and the family of the departed. The film follows his profound and sometimes comical journey with death as he uncovers the wonder, joy and meaning of life and living. Here's the trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6onZVeucA1c My question is, if you are in a similar situation, will you choose to work as an Undertaker? I personally find that it's a very meaningful job, however, I don't think I'll ever have enough guts to do it. How about you? Please do share.

I am the same as you. I know it is a necessary job and that someone has to do it, but I know I sure couldn't. And I don't know what would possess someone to take that course in school. Like, I have never heard of anyone saying I want to be a Mortisian when I grow up. But apparently the schools get full classes every year and it is a couple year course and every year they have hundreds of graduates so there are lots of young kids talking it. I started to watch that movie last week but I fell asleep almost right after it started. I will have to watch for it to come on again which I am sure it will. It was on the history channel here last week. I now wish I had stayed awake and watched it. It sounds like you really enjoyed it so I think I would have also.

I think there are people who feel the "calling" young. From young, they will know with certainty that this is a field they want a career in...

I don't think there's such a course in my country. Hmm.. maybe there is but I'm just not aware of it. It's indeed surprising that many people are willing to do it. Most people in my country shun it. It's quite a slow-paced movie so if you are more into fast-paced movies, you may not find it as enjoyable as I do.

i think if i was in a similar situation, i would because i would need something to protect my family. on the other hand, there are plenty of other manual labor jobs that maybe wouldnt have been as brutal, but being an undertaker probably pays pretty good relatively. i also love foreign films, ill have to check that one out. it sounds really good.
