Should I take my antibiotics?

I got a root canal last Thursday and the endodontist told me to take the pain pills and the antibiotics only if the tooth hurt. There is still a swelling and a big bump on the gum which he said indicates and infection. Since it's still there, even though the tooth doesn't bother me, do you think I should take the antibiotics?

If it does not hurt... it is not infected.
If it is not infected... you don't need antibiotics.
Even washing your mouth with some mouthwash like "listerine" will get ride of most infections. Antibiotics are for dealing with internal infections.
If you had a gum infection... you would know about it. lol
It hurts like hell.

Listerine, of course!
I'll try that and see if the swelling goes down. I'd much rather save the medicine in case I get something else-it will save me a doctor's visit! Thanks!

When I had my wisdom teeth out I was told to take the pain pills if there was pain and to take the antibiotic and the steroid until they were gone. I would think you should start taking the antibiotics now and take them until they're finished. But your best bet would be to call the office and see what they say. Hopefully they won't try to wrangle you into another office visit and just advise you over the phone!

The bump is greatly reduced since yesterday so I'm thinking it will resolve on its own. I can keep the meds for later use and save money on a doctor's visit! If the infection didn't show signs of abating, I would certainly start the antibiotics and finish them all but I'll let my immune system handle it this time. Thanks!

As others have said. Antibiotics should be taken until the end of the course and not if you have pain. If you take them now you will be fighting any infection. Leaving it until you have pain means that it will take longer for the infection to clear. You might even have to go back and buy some more. Maybe that's what he wants. Take care.

Thanks, P1ke! The instructions were rather confusing to me but now it seems to be clearing up on its own so I'll save them for future use.

The swelling began going down soon after I asked about it! So I'll save them for when and if I need them for something else. It will save me the cost of a doctor's visit!

I've had my share of root canals and know that swelling is normal, but "bumps" are not.
The first thing I'd do is take my temperature. If it's even a tiny bit elevated, take the antibiotics because that would definitely indicate an infection.
But, if you feel that bump is getting smaller and, if your temperature is normal, I'd leave it alone. Antibiotics seem to be given out way too often these days, making our immunity to them grow stronger and stronger.
Of course, I don't want you to take my advice, especially as it is contrary to what your endodontist said. He would know better about those things and I know that there's a high risk of infections setting into gums after a root canal because it's so invasive.
It would be a tossup for me at this point. If you don't take a lot of antibiotics regularly, go ahead and take them. It's only when we're given antibiotics all the time that we build up an immunity to them.
I hope you heal quickly and without any complications!

Thanks! I got the tooth looked at when I noticed the bump and swelling and it turned out it needed a root canal. I don't feel badly, nothing hurts and it's going down now so I'll just save the meds for when I might need them for something else. I haven't taken any antibiotics for years, thank God, I've been healthy as a horse!

Both my doctor & my dentist say that when you start taking an antibiotic, you should take the whole script...even if you're feeling better. Now the pain pills I only take when needed!!!! I've never had a problem after a root canal so I don't think you should still be swollen...but what do I know. I do hope you get to feeling better soon!!!

Thanks for the hug, I needed that!
I haven't started taking them, I was told not to unless the tooth started to hurt. I noticed this afternoon that the swelling is down a bit, too. So I'll save them in case I do need them for something--it'll save me a doctor's visit and money!

Are you sure you got that right? The pain pills are to be taken when it hurts. The antibiotics are to be taken to clear the infection. ALWAYS keep taking the antibiotics until they're gone. even if it looks/feels like it's better because the antibiotics shrink the infection until it's gone. it may look like it's better but if you skip the last few pills, it will come back and you'll have to get a new prescription.
keep taking the antibiotics. You're dentist should've been more clear on that.

I repeated his instructions back and he said that was right. The post-op instructions even said so. I don't understand it, other than doctors are getting more cautious about antibiotics. I wasn't even supposed to fill the prescriptions unless the tooth hurt but I did anyway. I figured I could always use the meds for something else and save a trip to the doctor. Thanks for your comments, it's always good to have another opinion.

You should take your antibiotics, it is very essential for your tooth to heal faster and avoind any infection. Dont think twice about it, just start taking your antibiotics.

That's what I was thinking, too, thanks! Sometimes we just have to have our own opinions validated and this is a great place for that.

Yes, it would be wise to keep taking it until there is no more in the bottle. Expecially since you still feel a lump in the area of the tooth.
I had a root canal a couple of years ago and I know what you're going through. Good luck with it, sweetie!

Actually, this was the best dental experience I've every had! I didn't feel a thing and the endodontist was terrific. It's not bothering me, it's just that lump. I noticed a couple of hours ago that it's smaller so I'll probably save them for when I'm sick and avoid a doctor visit and expense!

I agree, it's been years since I've taken any antibiotics so I can't see how they could hurt.
