What happened with our parakeet?

Last week we noticed one of our parakeets (the female) was sort of staggering around their cage and had trouble keeping her balance. It looked like she'd had a stoke or something. When I googled her symptoms, I read that a seed only diet is not good for birds and they need also fresh fruits and vegies. I immediately started giving them fresh apple slices. They absolutely loved it! With the way she was staggering around the cage, we thought we were going to lose her that night. The next day she was better and has continued to improve. Now she's pretty much back to normal. She never acted sick and never stopped eating or drinking. Can anyone tell what might have happened?

That's a bit scary! I have 2 parakeets and they eat mostly seed but we always share our fruit etc with them, so if I am eating an apple or mango, or any fruit really, I will take some in for them too and they do love it! Mind you, my birds love pretty much anything they get a hold of, they'll eat all sorts of things!

I'm not a bird person but it sounds like your bird was missing some important nutrients found in fruits and vegetables and was suffering from some sort of imbalance. Every animal has reserves of certain nutrients but they can run low if not fed a variety of foods. I'm glad she's doing better.
