Dealing with G6PD deficiency...

My 1 month old nephew has recently been diagnosed with the G6PD deficiency. It's a genetic blood disorder... I've done my readings and it's heartbreaking to know how such a fragile little baby can have a deficiency like. I want to know everything there is to know about it... How to deal with it, how serious it's gonna be, what can we do to prevent it... are there any new study that would completely treat this deficiency?

Hi there! I am a mother of a 4 years old healthy baby girl. She has a g6pd def. also. At first when i found out that she needs a confimatory test, i really cried. it is really painful for a mother to find out that her baby has a problem especially for a first time mom like me. so we have undergone the test and she was really positive. the hospital gave us the information about the deficiency and the foods that should ba avoided especially the medicines that should not be used. i really have a pediatrician for her. now shes healthy. i just avoid the soya foods especially the medicines that should not be use to treat her. there's no prevention to it because its from the genes of the parents. they can have normal life. because my kid is living a normal life. i guess it a case to case basis. because my kids deficiency isn't that serious but there are some serious cases i guess. i attended some seminar to know more about that stuff. there is no treatment to that. just do avoid fava beans and soya milk, soya beans. foods containing soya could be taken though. just avoid taking pure soya foods. lets just pray that they will continue to be healthy. regards to you...

Thank you Niah1976. I will definitely write that down and remember. I need to know everything i can do to help my nephew. I hope when he gets older, he will be as strong as your kid. What i'm just scared of, is that, from my readings since he is a male, and they are the ones who usually get the worse i guess. Cause the females become carrier. But then, i guess it is equally painful...
